Dr. Sean Elliott Appointed to Governor's Council on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response

Gov. Jan Brewer has appointed Dr. Sean Elliott, professor of pediatrics and medical director of infection prevention for the UA Health Network, to the newly established Council on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response. The council is comprised of leading experts from the fields of health, human services, public safety, emergency and military affairs, education and more. With a multidisciplinary team at UAHN, Elliott has created an "infection-prevention SWAT team" to develop protocols and training for infection control to safely care for patients and protect the well-being of staff and clinicians throughout the network.

Dr. Ronald S. Weinstein to be Honored at Connected Health Symposium

Dr. Ronald S. Weinstein, founding director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program at the Arizona Health Sciences Center, will be honored at the 11th annual Connected Health Symposium, hosted by the Center for Connected Health, Partners HealthCare. Weinstein is often referred to as the "father of telepathology" for inventing, patenting and commercializing robotic technology that has helped patients worldwide. The Arizona Telemedicine Program, which formally launched in 1996, provides telemedicine services, distance learning, informatics training and telemedicine technology assessment capabilities to communities throughout Arizona and in neighboring states.

Catherine Gerl Joins College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Board

Catherine Gerl, a human resources representative at the UA College of Nursing, is one of 10 human resources professionals in Arizona to be appointed as a board member to the 2014-15 Arizona chapter of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources. The association is an international network of human resources professionals working in academic settings, providing national leadership on higher-education workplace issues. The Arizona chapter has more than 200 members and represents 20 different institutions across the state.

Robin Reineke Honored for Human Rights Work

UA doctoral candidate Robin Reineke, co-founder and executive director of the Colibrí Center for Human Rights, received the Institute for Policy Studies' Letelier-Moffitt Memorial Human Rights Award on behalf of the center earlier this month. The Letelier-Moffitt awards are given annually by the nonprofit Institute for Policy Studies to honor human-rights workers. The Colibrí Center for Human Rights is a nonprofit organization that helps medical examiners along the border identify human remains through its Missing Migrant Project. Colibrí currently has more than 2,000 missing cases reported by families searching for lost loved ones in Arizona.

Sheila Gephart Selected as a 2014 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar

Sheila Gephart, assistant professor at the UA College of Nursing, is one of 12 nursing educators selected nationally as a 2014 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar. This award is given to early career nursing faculty members who demonstrate outstanding promise as future leaders in academic nursing and health care. Gephart's research is focused on prevention and early detection of necrotizing entercolitis, also known as NEC, a life-threatening complication that affects premature infants. Gephart developed the first-of-its-kind risk score for NEC called GutCheckNEC.
