The UA offers a variety of professional development opportunities that support the success of faculty, post-doctorates, graduate students, appointed professionals and staff.

This faculty development roundup is intended to highlight select upcoming opportunities that may be of specific interest to researchers and instructors on campus. These workshops have the potential to significantly impact the way members of the campus community think about research, teaching, technology transfer and more.

Annual Workshop on Preparing the Promotion Dossier
April 16, 8-9:30 a.m., Steward Observatory, Room N210, RSVP not required

The Annual Workshop on Promotion and Tenure and Continuing Status provides an overview of the promotion review process for candidates, committee members and administrators. It provides details on recent revisions in our policies and opportunities to ask questions about our Guide to the Promotion Process, which should be reviewed before attending this workshop.

Preparing Teaching and Outreach Portfolios

In spring 2013, the Faculty Senate approved revisions to our promotion criteria to institute an Inclusive View of Scholarship. Following up on the senate's leadership, promotion dossiers were expanded to include teaching portfolios, required classroom observations and an optional service and outreach portfolio. In this workshop and discussion, we will offer advice to candidates and reviewers on these revisions, and we will also welcome suggestions on how to improve support for preparing teaching portfolios.

NSF CAREER Grant Preparation Program
The following sessions support early career faculty interested in applying for the NSF CAREER grant:

NSF Proposal Development Planning
April 2, 3-4:30 p.m., Vine Avenue Annex, Room 102, Learn more here
This session will be an interactive session to discuss developing a proposal development plan and timeline. Attendees will leave the session with a draft of a realistic plan for preparing their proposal that will include allowing time for career coaching and scientific and editorial feedback.

NSF CAREER Grant Preparation Program Phase II: Commit to Submit

Phase II of the NSF CAREER Grant Preparation Program runs April through July 2015 and is open to researchers committed to the submission of an NSF CAREER Grant application in late July 2015. Sessions during this phase include proposal development and coaching and external proposal review. Faculty interested in participating in Phase II should contact Research Development Services at ResDev@email.arizona.edu and will need to provide a brief letter of support from their department head.

Responsible Conduct of Research Workshops
These interactive, discussion-based workshops are open to all of campus, and designed specifically for graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and early career faculty. All workshops count toward fulfillment of Responsible Conduct of Research training requirements from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The following professional development opportunities are offered through the UA's Office of Instruction and Assessment.

Introduction to Teaching Online: An Online Mini-Course
May 15-29, Online, Register here
In this fully online intensive mini-course participants can experience taking an online course while learning about tools and methods for teaching hybrid and fully online courses. Participants are expected to log in at least once per day and should reserve one hour per day for course-related activities such as reading, writing, media production or interaction. The mini-course is conducted asynchronously via the UA's D2L course management system. During an intensive two weeks, participants will be asked to complete modules and tasks related to designing online and hybrid courses. The mini-course includes examples of and guidance in: quality standards in online courses; online tests and quizzes; peer evaluation and collaboration; online lectures and presentations; discussion forum assignments; online meetings; and mid-term assessment of learning and teaching. Participants who complete 90 percent or more of the assignments will receive a certificate of completion. Learn more here.

Invention to Impact: Spring 2015 Commercialization Workshop Series

As a UA faculty member or graduate student, how can you harness your research to create the greatest impact for you, the University and society? This lunchtime commercialization workshop series, offered by Tech Launch Arizona, will cover the essential knowledge you need to bring your research to the world through commercialization. This series is a complete curriculum. While you are welcome to select individual workshops, it's recommended that you attend the full series to get the most out of the experience. Each engaging one-hour workshop will include brief presentations alternating with interactive discussions and activities. After each workshop, TLA staff will remain for an open Q-and-A.
