Do you know someone who deserves recognition for their hard work? Nominate them for an Award for Excellence.

Take a look around you. Do you have a colleague who goes above and beyond the call of duty to make the UA a better place to work?

If so, Monday is your last chance to nominate them for an Award for Excellence.

The Staff Advisory Council, the Appointed Professionals Advisory Council, the Shared Governance and Campus Community Advisory Committee, and the President's Office sponsor the awards, which recognize employees' outstanding service and achievements.

"To be nominated for an award is a University-wide recognition and utmost honor," said SAC president Sheri Hill, executive assistant for presidential events and visitor services. "When you submit a letter of nomination, the reward is amazing as your candidate is recognized for being nominated, and it's even more exciting if your nominee wins. I encourage you to 'look sideways' and spot that employee who is deserving of recognition."

APAC president Mark Napier, associate director of operations for Parking and Transportation Services, said the awards provide an opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals.

"The annual Award for Excellence provides us the opportunity to recognize our peers and professional colleagues who make this a great University and a wonderful place to be," Napier said. "These awards are made even more meaningful because the nominations come from those who know the true impact of the contributions made by the recipient. We should not miss this chance to look around us and recognize someone who makes the UA the great place it is."

Nominations are due by 3 p.m. on Monday. Recipients will be notified in March.

There are four types of awards:

University of Arizona Awards for Excellence will be presented to approximately 11 staff members and the appointed professionals, regardless of their length of service or pay grade. These awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievements. For classified staff, nominations are evaluated respectively within three pay-grade levels to ensure an equal distribution of awards among employees at all levels. Nominated individuals must be benefits-eligible.

The Billy Joe Varney Award for Excellence will be presented to one employee with at least 15 cumulative years of employment at the UA, who merits special recognition for a career of dedicated service to the University, its employees and the community. Nominees can be chosen from any employment category. Individuals nominated must be benefits-eligible.

The University of Arizona Team Award for Excellence will be presented to a team primarily made up of classified staff and appointed professionals. Team members should have complementary skills, be committed to a common purpose and share specific performance goals. They should also have established means by which to hold themselves accountable. A team shall be defined as three or more benefits-eligible employees, regardless of their length of service. The award will be presented in recognition of the team's outstanding contribution to its unit, department or University as a whole.

The Department Award for Excellence will be presented to a single department in recognition of its outstanding departmental excellence in the management of its people and resources. Nominations should include specific examples of exemplary performance in the criteria themes outlined. Judges will look at how much departments meet and/or exceed the selection criteria. The department selected by the judges to receive the UA Department Award for Excellence will receive a commemorative plaque.

All of the awards, with the exception of the Department Award for Excellence, are based on achievements in activities beyond normal duties and come with a University-funded monetary award ranging from $1,000-$1,500.

Awards will be presented by Provost Andrew Comrie at the UA Awards for Excellence Ceremony on April 23.
