Bernard Paul Herber, Professor Emeritus of Economics at the UA Eller College of Management, died on Sept. 21 in La Jolla, California. He was 84 years old.

Herber joined the UA faculty in 1957, specializing in public economics and international public finance. His textbook, "Modern Public Finance," was used in over 200 universities and colleges worldwide, and was translated into several languages. He continued working on research projects and writing and presenting papers until his death.

"Bernie was foremost a wonderful person and a great friend," said Mark Walker, UA professor of economics. "He was also a very good economist, whose special expertise was in public finance, where he wrote a much-used textbook. He was at the vanguard of the economics of Antarctica, and is regarded as a leader by scholars of Antarctica in diverse fields. Bernie was also a great Wildcat basketball fan."

Herber was born on Nov. 11, 1929, in Ottumwa, Iowa, and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1948. He received his bachelor's degree from Loyola University in Los Angeles in 1954, and earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Washington in 1960.

In addition to his family, Herber enjoyed the outdoors and taking road trips on state routes rather than on freeways. He traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, and had a passion for antique cars.

He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Jean; his sister, Frances; five children, 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial Mass in celebration of Herber's life will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Historic Church at the Old Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside, California. A graveside service and reception in the Mission Cemetery will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Herber's memory to a charity of your choice.
