It may be spring break, but it's not too early to start thinking about plans for the summer, especially if you've got kids who will need entertaining when school lets out.

Now is the time to sign your children up for one of the many summer youth programs sponsored by the University of Arizona. From physics to football, there are a number of educational and entertaining youth camps and classes to choose from on the UA campus and in the surrounding area. A major perk for UA employees: Many programs offer discounts to faculty and staff. Some also offer need-based scholarships.

Check out the following UA programs and reserve a spot early for your son or daughter.  

Arizona Youth University 2010
Students in grades 4-12 can explore a variety of subject areas and activities, from medicine to video game programming, through Arizona Youth University summer camps, offered through the UA Outreach College in conjunction with other campus departments.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: Individual camp dates vary between June 7 and July 16.
Cost: $325 -$895, UA employees get $25 off full-day camps or $15 off half-day camps if they register by March 19.

Eller College Technology Summer Camps
The Eller College of Management's DigiDudes and TechDivas Technology Programs invite students in third through eighth grade to learn about technology through games, projects and activities involving photography, film, PowerPoint presentations and more. The co-ed camps are broken into four sessions that cater to different age groups. The theme of this year's camps is "My Dream Business." Students will research information about their dream businesses and create presentations for a showcase.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Dates: June 7-11, 14-18, 21-25, July 5-9
Cost: $250, $25 discount for UA employees

2010 Astronomy Camp
Teenagers and adults alike can become astronomers through this unique camp that teaches participants about the universe. Campers interact with leading scientists and operate research-class telescopes.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Cost: $750-$975

2010 Summer Institute on Medical Ignorance
This program targets disadvantaged high school students. Selected students get an opportunity to work a paid 40 hours a week with physicians and biomedical scientists as they explore health careers at the UA College of Medicine.

Biotechnology Summer Course
High school students who are entering their sophomore, junior or senior year and are interested in biology, genetics, DNA, evolution or biomedical research can learn about the latest topics in genomics and biology in this "Genes, Biotechnology & the Environment" course. Selected participants will use the latest techniques to study DNA and genes in insects and bacteria.
Application deadline: April 1

Laurel Clark Earth Camp
The Laurel Clark Earth Camp, a partnership between the UA College of Science and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, is an environmental summer program for middle and high school students. Students in the 2010 program will investigate climate change and sustainability issues through a variety of hands-on activities. Middle school students will take day trips and go on four overnight adventures during the two-week camp. High school students will explore climate and ecology during a five-day rafting trip down the Green River's Desolation Canyon in central Utah.  
Application deadline: April 3
Dates: June 14-18, 21-26, 22-27(middle school), July 7-18 (high school)
Cost: $750-$1,500 

Arizona Rivers Riparian Research Experience 
Ten high school students will be selected to participate in a 15-day field camp in which they'll explore more than a dozen Arizona river sites. They will learn field research techniques and work with experts in riparian and ecological restoration

Dates: June 12-26
Cost: $700 

Summer Institute for High School Writers
High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who want to improve their writing skills can do so with the help of workshops and tutors if selected to participate in the institute, offered free of charge through the UA's Writing Skills Improvement Program.

Summer Engineering Academy
This weeklong program, offered through the College of Engineering, introduces high school students to careers in engineering. Students spend time in the classroom with University professors and get the opportunity to design their own aerodynamic cars and various devices.

Cost: $485 (plus $10 application fee), 10 percent discount for UA employees 

Summer Engineering Robotics Camp
Sixth, seventh and eighth graders accepted to the Burr Brown Texas Instruments Summer Engineering Robotics Camp will build robots from Lego Mindstorm kits as they learn about math, physics, engineering design and project management. The camp is hosted by the College of Engineering.
Application deadline: May 1
Date: June 14-18
Cost: $350 (plus $10 application fee), 10 percent discount for UA employees

The Honors College Summer of Excellence 2010
Ambitious high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to participate in a five-week college preparatory program that allows them to live on campus and enroll in courses for college credit.
Application deadline: May 14 for Summer Session I, May 28 for Summer Session II
Dates: June 5-July 8, July 10-Aug. 11
Cost: See Web site for tuition and fees information. Eligible UA employees may take advantage of the Qualified Tuition Reduction Program. 

Arizona Athletics Programs

Dan Tobias Soccer Camps
Girls ages 11 to 18 can practice basic to advanced soccer skills such as speed, passing, goalkeeping and more.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: June 1-4, 8-11, 15-18
Cost: $150

Mike Stoops 2010 Arizona Football Camps
Athletes ages 8 to 18 can practice passing, punting and kicking at a variety of camps led by Arizona Football staff.
Application deadline: Applications accepted until one week before a camp starts.
Dates: Camp dates vary between June 5 and June 11

Cost: $35-$500

2010 Sean Miller Basketball Camp
During this day camp, boys entering grades two through nine will learn basketball fundamentals from UA coaching staff and athletes and other college and high school coaches from around the country.
Application deadline: Open until filled

2010 Niya Butts Basketball Academy
Girls grades two through high school will learn fundamental basketball skills and compete in league play in one of three camps.

David Rubio Volleyball Camp
Girls and boys ages 10 to 18 are invited to participate in individual or team camps for volleyball players of all skill levels.
Application deadline: June 1 or July 1, 5 or 12, depending on the camp
Dates: Camp dates vary between July 8 and July 18
Cost: $90-$425 

2010 Bill Ryden Sonoran Gymnastics Camp
Aspiring gymnasts ages 6 to 18 will receive instruction on vault, bars, beam, floor, dance, and trampoline in the UA's state-of-the-art gymnastics facility. The camp is open to 75 gymnasts of all skill levels.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: July 11-15
Cost: $360 or $495 (plus $125 or $195 application fee)

Southwest Camps – Softball
Campers in fourth through 12th grade will pitch, hit, catch, run, slide and have the opportunity to work alongside the Arizona Wildcat softball team and some of the country's best instructors during day or overnight camps. Celebrated UA softball coach Mike Candrea has led these camps for 23 years.    
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: June 13-17, 20-24
Cost: $425-$725

Campus Recreation Programs

"A" Camp
Children ages 5-12 participate in a variety of day camp activities, including arts and crafts, swimming and fitness activities through this certified child care program. For more information, visit an "A" Camp/Teen Camp open house on April 10 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or April 11 from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: Camps last one week and run June 7-Aug. 13
Cost: $180, $170 for UA employees, $150 for Student Recreation Center members

Teen Camp
Children ages 12-14 will participate in a variety of recreational activities to develop skills in leadership, teamwork, fitness and respect during a weeklong camp. UA students will provide instruction for this certified child care program. For more information, visit an "A" Camp/Teen Camp open house on April 10 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or April 11 from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: Camps last one week and run June 11-Aug. 13
Cost: $215, $205 for UA employees, $185 for Student Recreation Center members.
