Starting July 25, service for the Sun Link streetcar officially begins.

You've probably seen the Sun Link streetcar whirring past during its testing phase, and that distinct "ding-ding" has already become a familiar sound. Starting next month, the anticipation will end as streetcar service officially begins.

A grand opening celebration for the all-electric streetcar will be held on July 25 at 9 a.m. at Fifth Avenue and Congress Street. Riders will be able to hop aboard the streetcar for the first time that day.

UA employees and students interested in trying out the new streetcar can sign up now for a free pass, good for 30 days of unlimited rides on the Sun Link streetcar and the Sun Tran bus system from Aug. 15 through Sept. 14. Register here and the pass will be mailed to you.

"We encourage the campus community to sign up for the free Sun Link 30-day pass and give this new transportation option a try," said Bill Davidson, public information and marketing manager for UA Parking and Transportation Services.

Construction began in April 2012 on the 3.9-mile streetcar route, which connects the main UA campus with the Arizona Health Sciences Center, Main Gate Square, Fourth Avenue, downtown Tucson and the Mercado District west of I-10. Click here for a complete map of the streetcar route (PDF).

"We're thrilled to help premier Tucson's electric-powered streetcar," Davidson said. "This will change the way people move around Tucson, augmenting sustainability and strengthening the sense of community in our growing city."

Thanks to a partnership between UA Parking and Transportation Services and Sun Tran, UA employees also can receive a 50 percent discount year round on SunGO passes, good for use on Sun Tran buses, Sun Express, Sun Shuttle and the Sun Link streetcar. More information is available on the Parking and Transportation Services website.
