VPN Access Requires NetID+ Beginning April 30

Office of the CIO
March 11, 2015

If you use the campus Virtual Private Network to establish a secure connection from your home computer, laptop, or mobile device to the UA network, action will be required to use the VPN after April 30.

The method UA faculty, staff and students use to access the campus Virtual Private Network (VPN) will change significantly on April 30, 2015. University Information Technology Services (UITS) is incorporating NetID+ into the VPN to further enhance network security and protect the identities of faculty, staff and students.

What is NetID+?
NetID+ requires users to use a second method of authentication (called two-factor authentication) before accessing an online resource. This prevents anyone but you from accessing applications and services secured with NetID+, even if they know your password.

What is changing?
In addition to your UA NetID login and password that have always been required, you will see a “NetID+ Method” field when accessing the VPN with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. The purpose of this new field is to enter the second method of authentication.  You would have set up this method when you enrolled in NetID+. To learn more about establishing a VPN connection with NetID+ go to: http://uits.arizona.edu/services/vpn#establish.

What do I need to do?
The NetID+ enrollment process requires you to provide your Employee or Student ID, Date of Birth, and last 6 digits of your CatCard.  If you do not have a CatCard, please contact the 24/7 IT Support Center at (520) 626-TECH (8324). You will also need to use a computer to sign up for NetID+ and the actual device (smart phone, cell phone, tablet, iPad, landline phone, or hardware token) you plan to use for the second factor of authentication.

Enrollment is free and available now.  Enroll in NetID+ today to avoid being denied access to VPN. Go to https://webauth.arizona.edu/netid-plus/.  Log in with your NetID and password and complete the necessary steps to enroll.

Note: By enrolling in NetID+, you will also be prompted for a second authentication when using Outlook Web Application (OWA).

Why is this change occurring?
NetID+ protects your account in the event that your password is stolen and it makes your login session tamper-proof. VPN is one of the first university services to receive this added protection. All members of the university community are encouraged to enroll in NetID+ two-factor authentication today.
