Dr. Cecilia Rosales Named to 2016 List of Arizona's Most Influential Women
Dr. Cecilia Rosales, assistant dean and professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health – Phoenix, was named one of the Most Influential Women in Arizona by AZ Business Magazine. Rosales does research focused on public health disparities related to the Southwest and border region, and has more than 25 years of experience in public health. She was recently awarded a grant to develop and implement a mobile unit to provide health services and promote healthy lifestyles to the Latino population in Maricopa County. Rosales and other honorees will be recognized on Aug. 25 at a reception at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.
Two College of Medicine Doctors Honored With Educator Award
Dr. Mihra Taljanovic, professor in the Department of Medical Imaging, and Dr. Lana Gimber, assistant professor in the Department of Medical Imaging, were awarded the Radiological Society of North America Educator Award for their dedication to furthering the profession of radiology and commitment to radiology education by delivering high-quality educational content for Radiological Society of North America endeavors. The award, established in 2011, serves as a benchmark of academic productivity in support of a meaningful and successful radiology career and commitment to radiology education.
Professor Named Honorary Citizen of Fortaleza, Brazil
Tim Finan, a research anthropologist and professor in the School of Anthropology, was named an honorary citizen of Fortaleza, Brazil, because of his valuable contribution to the public policy of food security in the region. Finan’s research focuses on environmental and climate issues for food security and evaluation of public policies related to these issues. The honorary citizen title was established by the Fortaleza City Council to honor someone who works to improve quality of life for residents of Fortaleza, which is the fifth largest city in Brazil. Finan said receiving the title is the most personal, most rewarding and meaningful honor possible. "It symbolizes, for me, the recognition of the tremendous value of the University of Arizona's collaboration with and commitment to its multiple institutional partners in Fortaleza and the state of Ceará," he said. Catherine Merrill Joins United Way Board
Catherine Merrill, technical project manager at Steward Observatory, was elected to the board of directors for the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. She became part of Women United, a subgroup of the United Way, after she was looking for an organization that had a meaningful mission for her. The group helps improve youth literacy through a program called "My Summer Library," in which children in kindergarten, first and second grades can pick out 12 books to keep and read over the summer. The overall goal is to get students to a higher literacy rate by the third grade. As a member of the United Way board, Merrill will chair Women United. She says her role on the board will be to support all of United Way's goals, and she will focus specifically on childhood literacy and women's leadership.
UA Distinguished Professor Honored With German Tradition
For his 60th birthday, Albrecht Classen, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of German Studies, received a festschrift, which is a German word for a commemorative collection of articles edited by a colleague in honor of a scholar. The tradition of the festschrift started in Germany, and the honor is usually given for the 65th or 70th birthday. Classen received volume 28 of the journal Mediaevistik. The publication consists of 21 articles written by Classen's colleagues and friends from the U.S., Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Austria and Australia. The journal is dedicated to international, interdisciplinary research on the Middle Ages, which is Classen's area of research.
Cancer Center Design Recognized
The UA's Cancer Center in Phoenix was recognized with a 2016 National Design Build Project/Team Award for the Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. The building was designed to deliver the highest standard of care using the most modern technologies. The building includes space for radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy and interventional radiology, exam and procedure rooms, a support and wellness center, infusion, a clinical pharmacy and a healing garden. The Design-Build Institute of America defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build. Its awards showcase design-build best practices and celebrate the achievements of owners and design-build teams in 10 categories across the spectrum of horizontal and vertical construction.
