Professor Receives Two Awards for Work in World Politics

V. Spike Peterson, professor in the School of Government and Public Policy, received the Charles A. McCoy Career Achievement Award from the American Political Science Association's New Political Science section. The award recognizes a progressive political scientist who has had a long, successful career as a writer, teacher and activist. Peterson also was selected recently for a Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship, which was hosted by the Critical Global Politics unit at the University of Manchester. During the fall semester, she was able to contribute to the new Intimate Geopolitics project at the University of Manchester, and presented on her work at four other United Kingdom universities.

Marc Miller Named One of Most Influential People in Legal Education

Marc Miller, dean of the James E. Rogers College of Law, was ranked No. 8 in The National Jurist's list of the top 25 most influential people in legal education. Under Miller's leadership, the law school became the first law school in the country to accept GRE scores from applicants in lieu of the LSAT. "This is a move that could shape the future of law school admissions," the magazine noted. Visit The National Jurist's website to see the list.

COM-Phoenix Communications Office Receives Award for Excellence

The Association of American Medical Colleges recognized the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix marketing and communications team with an Award for Excellence, which honors "exemplary work and contributions advancing medicine, research, and education in academic medical centers." The team received an honorable mention for outstanding work in the Special Events category for Connect2STEM, which drew 5,000 attendees in 2016. This is the second year in a row the College of Medicine – Phoenix team has been recognized by the AAMC. Allison Otu, senior director of marketing and communications, and Tess Calle, director of integrated marketing and communications, will accept the award in March at the AAMC annual professional development conference.

UA Alumni Association, UA Foundation Win CASE Awards

The UA Alumni Association and the UA Foundation were recognized for their communications efforts by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education with regional Awards of Excellence in multiple categories. The awards showcase "best practices in alumni relations, fundraising, public relations, advancement services, special events, and communications." The Alumni Association's winning entries:

  • Cats in the Corner Office, Epic Homecoming Experience Contest, Alumni Nation App and Social Media Campaign (Best Use of Social Media/Technology).
  • Arizona Alumni Magazine, summer 2016 issue (Design and Photography).

The UA Foundation was recognized in the Publications category for its 2016 Annual & Endowment Report.

Professor Appointed to Centering Healthcare Institute Board of Directors

Dr. Andrea Darby-Stewart, clinical associate professor at the College of Medicine – Phoenix, was appointed to the board of directors for the Centering Healthcare Institute, a nonprofit focused on improving prenatal health care. Darby-Stewart is an experienced clinician-leader who currently serves as associate program director of the family medicine residency at HonorHealth, a nonprofit health system based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Darby-Stewart started her position on the board at the beginning of January and will serve for two years.
