CUES Taking Preproposals for 'Spanning Boundaries Challenge'
The Center for University Education Scholarship is accepting preproposals from interdisciplinary faculty teams for a new program designed to address challenges impacting University education.
The Spanning Boundaries Challenge is the newest program within CUES, whose mission is to support scholarship and innovation in University teaching and learning practices. The winning team will receive up to $100,000 for two years starting in the fall of 2020.
The challenge's theme will vary from year to year. This year's theme is "Quantitative Intuition" – the ability to understand and interpret data in various forms and contexts in order to ask informed questions about the data, validate it, and tell effective stories about it.
Though the theme may seem tailored toward science, technology, engineering and math disciplines, quantitative intuition broadly explores how data appeals to the human experience, and how to communicate that effectively, said Guadalupe Lozano, the center's director.
"We want to have projects that are multidisciplinary or genuinely cross-unit in nature and are not necessarily about STEM," Lozano said.
The program's focus on project-based, thematic interdisciplinarity sets it apart from other CUES initiatives, such as the CUES Distinguished Fellowships, Lozano said.
Though other programs do not rule out collaboration, Lozano said,the Spanning Boundaries Challenge "shines a different light and has the potential to capture a piece of the mission of CUES that is critical yet not always captured by our fellowships."
Preproposals will be due in February. After review, some of the proposed projects will be invited to submit full proposals, which will be due in late April. A single project will be selected in May. Visit the CUES website for information on deadlines, eligibility guidelines and submission details.
