Cyclists will speed through campus April 4 for the third annual University of Arizona Criterium Bicycle Race, presented by the UA Cycling Club and Fair Wheel Bikes.

The XOOD Energizes UA Criterium Bicycle Race, sponsored by the XOOD performance drink company, pits racers of all ages and experience levels against one another to win cash and assorted prizes.

The event includes a series of races of varying lengths for everyone from novices to professional cyclists to children as young as 13. About 20 riders from the UA Cycling Club will compete in the event against other men's and women's teams in the Southwest Collegiate Cycling Conference, including riders from Arizona State University.

Races will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a six-mile campus course. They will range from two laps to 12 laps, or 72 miles.

Winners will take home varying cash prizes. Last year, more than 200 racers participated in the event.

"We wanted to promote cycling awareness at the UA and in the Tucson community," said Tom Wilson, faculty adviser for the UA Cycling Club, a group of full-time student cycling enthusiasts.

Community members are encouraged to attend the event, where there will be two raffles held, one exclusively for spectators who ride their own bicycles, and wear a helmet, to the race.

For more information about the race or how to register to compete, contact Melanie Meyers at 250-3002 or melanie.meyers@gmail.com or David Glick at 269-8460 or dglick@u.arizona.edu. Registration ranges from free to $25 depending on the race. Information is also available on the UA Cycling Club Web site.
