The University of Arizona is one of the state's best places to work, according to Forbes.

The UA was included on the magazine's inaugural list of America's best-in-state employers, placing No. 11 out of 72 employers in Arizona and No. 1 in the education subcategory. The UA was ranked No. 2 among employers headquartered in Arizona.

"I am thrilled that the University of Arizona has earned this recognition as one of the state's best workplaces," UA President Robert C. Robbins said. "With more than 16,000 people in our workforce, we take immense pride in providing an outstanding professional environment where employees can expand their own potential while helping our students pursue success."

Forbes and Statista – a German online statistics portal – selected America's best-in-state employers based on an independent survey from a sample of more than 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their U.S. operations. The surveys were administered in a series of anonymous online panels and provide a representative sample of the U.S. workforce from October 2018 to February 2019.

Employees were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family. Participants were also prompted to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stood out either positively or negatively.

Behind the UA's ranking

Many factors may have encouraged survey participants to rank the UA as one of Arizona's best places to work – including benefits, professional development programs and support for a balance of life and work.

The UA offers its employees a wide range of benefits, such as tuition reduction, six weeks of parental leave for both parents (offered by only 40% of employers nationwide), and benefits for domestic partners.

Life & Work Connections – part of the Division of Human Resources – provides resources related to  child care, adult care and elder care. LWC also offers short-term mental health counseling and help with stress management and burnout prevention. Other services include annual flu shots, weight management, health screenings and nutrition counseling. Campus Recreation offers discounts to UA employees as well as their own area to work out, the Smart Moves Studio.

The Office of Leadership and Organizational Development, also part of HR, offers assessments and workplace support for departments and coaching for leaders.
