August marks the end of summer break, but also the beginning of classes. This month has plenty of campus events, including helping new and returning Wildcats find their way at the UA.

There are two ways to look at August: the end of summer break and the beginning of the school year. Luckily, there are events happening on campus that appeal to followers of both perspectives.

August's events include lectures on the Thirty Years' War, opportunities to lend a hand to new and returning Wildcats, information about recruiting student employees and plenty of chances to cheer on the volleyball team.

For more information about what to find to do on campus, visit the UA Master Calendar.

Lecture Series – 'Religious War Beyond the Battlefield in the Reformation Era' | Sundays in August

This four-part lecture series, presented by the Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies, will examine the Thirty Years' War, which led to the destruction of central Europe in the 1600s. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the war's beginning.

The lectures – presented by graduate students in the Department of History – will go beyond the war's political strategies and military tactics, diving into the experiences of civilians, the roles of clergy and women, and the emotional effects the war had on communities.

The Summer Lecture Series is held each year by the division, and lectures are free and open to the public. This summer's series will be held at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.

Welcoming Wildcats | Aug. 15-19

Classes may not start until Aug. 20, but plenty of activity will happen before then as students return to campus in the days leading up to the beginning of the semester. Housing and Residential Life is looking for volunteers to help students settle into their new digs on three of the four Move-In days: Aug. 15, 16 and 17. Volunteers will be asked to participate in hourlong training sessions in early August. Find more information about being a Move-In Crew volunteer here.

On Aug. 19 – the day before classes begin – Campus Recreation and Enrollment Management will join forces to present Bash at the Rec, combining two classic start-of-semester events: Meet Me at the Rec and Bigger. Better. Bash! The unofficial Wildcat welcome party invites faculty and staff to connect with incoming students as they discover the many ways to get involved on campus, make new friends and learn University traditions. The event will include free food, giveaways and music.

Wildcat Student Employment Fair | Aug. 22

The Wildcat Student Employment Fair, presented by the Office of Student Engagement, is a great place to steer students who are looking for a job. But the fair is also an opportunity for staff and faculty to recruit student employees for part-time positions during the academic year.

The fair runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Memorial Center's Grand Ballroom. Participation is free for UA units. Click here to register on Handshake, the UA's job board for student positions.

Cactus Classic Volleyball Tournament | Aug. 31

The UA volleyball team will have its home opener during the Cactus Classic tournament on Aug. 31 at McKale Memorial Center. Arizona will host Pacific University, Lipscomb University and San Diego State University.

The Wildcats plays against Lipscomb at 10 a.m. and against San Diego State at 7 p.m.
