If Tucson's summer swelter has you searching for things to do indoors, look no farther than the UA's lineup of July events, which is filled with activities held in the comfort of air-conditioned theaters, auditoriums and similar spaces.

The month provides opportunities to bone up on your Spanish-speaking skills, hear readings from award-winning writers and learn about the very thing that has most everyone hiding out – the sun. Those who don't venture outdoors until after sunset can celebrate Independence Day by watching the "A" Mountain fireworks show from atop UA parking garages.

As always, for more information about UA events, check out the Master Calendar.

'Spanish Conversations Sessions: A Taste of Mexican Culture' | Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 3-19

The Centro de Estudios Mexicano-Tucson of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, known as UNAM-Tucson, is holding casual discussions for those who want to sharpen their Spanish-speaking skills. The free sessions are open to all skill levels, and participants can attend as many sessions as they like.

The meetings are every Tuesday and Thursday through July 19 in the University Services Building, Room 307. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.

Those who wish to attend can RSVP to Jorge Salinas at jsalinas@tucson.unam.mx or 520-621-1784.

Fireworks Viewing at UA Parking Garages | July 4

Some of the best vantage points for the Independence Day fireworks show at "A" Mountain are right here on campus. Parking & Transportation Services will reserve the top levels of three parking garages on the west side of campus on the evening of July 4, allowing members of the public to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the show, weather conditions permitting.

Upper-level access at the Main Gate, Tyndall Avenue and South Stadium garages begins at 6 p.m. Other levels will be available for free parking. Click here for a map of garage locations.

Poetry Center Summer Reading: July Westhale and Felicia Zamora | July 5

Join July Westhale, the UA Poetry Center's 2018 fellow, and Phoenix-based writer Felicia Zamora as they read from their work during a free event at the Poetry Center.

Westhale, an Oakland, California-based poet and writer, is the award-winning author of "Trailer Trash," "The Cavalcade" and "Occasionally Accurate Science." Zamora is the education programs coordinator at Arizona State University's Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Her books include "Of Form & Gather," "& in Open, Marvel" and "Instrument of Gaps."

The readings will be followed by a Q&A.

Summer Science Saturday – 'Our Sun' | July 14

The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory's annual open house at the Gerard P. Kuiper Space Sciences building will focus on the sun and NASA's upcoming Parker Solar Probe mission. Slated for launch between July 31 and Aug. 19, the probe will enter the sun's atmosphere, bringing the spacecraft closer to the sun than any others before it.

All-day exhibits will include children's activities and interesting details about the mission.

Joe Giacalone, professor of planetary sciences and co-investigator for the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument on the Parker Solar Probe, will present a lecture titled "Parker Solar Probe: A Mission to Touch the Sun."

KEYS Research Showcase | July 20

The KEYS Research Internship Program at the  BIO5 Institute provides Arizona high school students interested in bioscience, engineering, environmental health or biostatistics an opportunity to work alongside top faculty in UA labs. The program culminates with a poster session showcasing what interns have explored during the program. A closing ceremony will follow the presentations at Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.

Art for Justice Film Series: Free Screening of 'Mothers of Bedford' | July 25

The 2011 documentary "Mothers of Bedford" follows five women incarcerated in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County, New York, and the impact their prison sentences have on their relationships with their children.

The free screening at The Loft Cinema is presented by the UA Poetry Center, and made possible by a $500,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. The center is using the funding over the next three years to commission work from writers to increase awareness about mass incarceration in the U.S.
