Got kids who need something to do this summer?

The University of Arizona sponsors a number of summer youth programs, many of which take place right on campus, making it easy for UA employees to get their kids to fun activities ranging from swimming lessons to engineering camp. There are also employee discounts available for several programs, while others offer academic merit and need-based scholarships. Deadlines are nearing and space is limited for many, so register now.

Arizona Youth University 2009
Student in grades 3-12 can explore a variety of subject areas and activities, from chess to fencing, through Arizona Youth University summer camps, offered through the UA Outreach College in conjunction with other campus departments.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Dates: Individual camp dates vary between June 1 and July 17.
Cost: $240-$575

Summer Engineering Academy
This weeklong program, offered through the College of Engineering, introduces high school students to careers in engineering. Students spend time in the classroom with University professors and get the opportunity to design their own aerodynamic cars and other devices.
Application deadline: April 27
Dates:
June 7-12, 14-19, 21-26
Cost: $485 (plus $10 application fee), 10 percent discount for UA employees

Summer Engineering Robotics Camp
Sixth, seventh and eight graders accepted to the Burr Brown Texas Instruments Summer Engineering Robotics Camp will build robots from Lego Mindstorm kits as they learn about math, physics, computer programming, engineering design and project management. The camp is hosted by the College of Engineering.
Application deadline: April 27
Date: June 8-10
Cost: $350, 10 percent
discount for UA employees  

Summer Institute for High School Writers
High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who want to improve their writing skills can do so with the help of workshops and tutors if selected to participate in the institute, offered free of charge through the UA's Writing Skills Improvement Program. 
Application deadline: April 30
Dates: July 13-31

Cost: Free

Eller College Technology Summer Camps
Third- through eighth-graders participate in projects using digital photography, video, photo editing and graphic design. Camps are divided by age group and gender into the "Tech Divas" and "Digi Dudes." There is also a male-female "Tech Sleuths" camp for sixth- through eighth-graders and an "M.a.D. Techs" camp for mothers and daughters.
Application deadline: Open until filled. There are still openings available, especially for girls.
Dates: Camp dates vary between June 6 and June 26

Cost: $105-$225

The Honors College Summer of Excellence 2009
Ambitious high school sophomores, juniors or seniors are invited to participate in a five-week college preparatory program that allows them to live on campus, participate in workshops and enroll in courses for college credit. UA employee discount available.
Application deadline: May 15 for Summer Session I, May 29 for Summer Session II
Dates: June 6-9, July 11-Aug. 12

Arizona Rivers - High School Riparian Research Experience 
Ten high school students will be selected to participate in a 15-day summer camping experience designed to help them develop field research skills and an appreciation for Arizona's water resources, plants and animals.
Application deadline: April 15
Dates: June 5-20
Cost: $700

Journey: Opportunities for Leaders of Tomorrow (JOLT)
Hosted by the Arizona Cooperative Extension, this leadership camp for teens between 14 and 18 promotes personal development, team building, self-confidence, trust and communication skills.
Application deadline: Early-bird registration, for a discounted rate, is due April 15. Regular registration deadline is May 15.
Dates: June 15-19
Cost: $175 (early) or $190

2009 Astronomy Camp
Teenagers and adults alike can become astronomers through this unique camp that teaches participants about the universe while interacting with leading scientists and operating research-class telescopes.
Application deadline: Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Cost: $750-$975

Laurel Clark Earth Camp
The Laurel Clark Earth Camp, a partnership between the UA College of Science and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, is an environmental summer program for middle and high school students. Students learn about the Sonoran Desert through hiking, camping and hands-on activities.
Application deadline: April 10
Dates: June 15-19, 22-27, July 8-18
Cost: $750-$1,500
 

Arizona Athletics Programs

2009 Andy Lopez Baseball Academy
Aspiring baseball players from age 7 to high school seniors are invited to hone their skills and compete under the instruction of UA baseball coaching staff through a variety of camps.
Application deadline: Open
Dates: Camp dates vary between July 5 and Aug. 1
Cost: $225, $479

2009 Arizona Football Camps
Children ages 8 through high school can practice passing, punting and kicking at a variety of camps led by Arizona Football staff. UA employee discount available.
Application deadline: June 2, 3 and 8 depending on the camp
Dates: Camp dates vary between June 6 and June 13
Cost: $35-$270

UA Wildcat Golf Camps
Students ages 9-18 can practice their swing at one of the UA's day or overnight golf camps.
Application deadline: Open until filled. 
Dates: June 18-22
Cost: $325-$975

Campus Recreation Programs

"A" Camp
Children ages 5-12 participate in a variety of day camp activities, including arts and crafts, swimming and fitness activities through this certified child care program. For more information, visit an "A" Camp/Teen Camp open house on April 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or April 26 from 12-2 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
Application deadline: Campers are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis up until a week before a camp begins.
Dates: Camps last one week and run June 1-Aug. 7.
Cost: $180, $170 for UA employees, $150 for Student Recreation Center members

Teen Camp
Children ages 12-14 will participate in a variety of recreational activities to develop skills in leadership, teamwork, fitness and respect during a weeklong camp. UA students will provide instruction for this certified child care program. For more information, visit an "A" Camp/Teen Camp open house on April 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or April 26 from 12-2 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
Application deadline: Campers are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis up until a week before a camp begins.
Dates: Camps last one week and run June 1-Aug 7.
Cost: $215, $205 for UA employees, $185 for
Student Recreation Center members.

Kids Summer Swim 2009
Campus Recreation offers swimming lessons for children ages 3-17. Courses are taught by University students who are certified as Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Application deadline: Registration dates are May 30, June 13 and July 11
Dates: June 1-11, 15-25, July 13-23
Cost: $60, $45 for Student Recreation Center members ($10 discount on each child registered after the first one)
