Three University of Arizona employees are finalists for the annual "40 Under 40" awards, which recognize young community leaders committed to enriching Tucson.

Tanisha Price-Johnson, Marc Johnston and Mary Beth Tucker are among 60 finalists for the awards, which are presented by the Tucson Business Edge magazine. The magazine honors “up-and-coming business and community leaders under the age of 40 – the leaders who will take Tucson into a bright and prosperous future,” according to the magazine’s award Web site. The 40 award winners will be recognized Aug. 13 at the Doubletree Hotel Reid Park.

A number of the other finalists – who come from arts organizations, higher education institutions, health care organizations, media outlets and major corporations – also are UA alumni.

Price-Johnson, who has worked at the University in various positions since 1996 and earned her journalism degree from the UA in 1993, is committed to aiding students, particularly underrepresented college students. She has also volunteered with the YWCA and is a member of numerous organizations, including the Tucson chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

“I am greatly honored to even be nominated for this award,” said Price-Johnson, director of admissions for UA’s College of Medicine and a doctoral degree candidate in the UA’s higher education program.

Johnson noted a quote by famed tennis player Althea Gibson, who once said: “’No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you.’

“I thank my family, mentors and colleagues for all of their support,” Price-Johnson said.

Johnston, UA’s Asian Pacific American Student Affairs director, is responsible for serving the UA’s Asian Pacific American student population while also working to improve the retention of such students. Before coming to Tucson, he worked with Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and students of mixed race at New York University.

“After only one year in Tucson, this recognition makes me feel truly welcomed into the Tucson community,” Johnston said.

Johnston, who has co-authored articles and presented at conferences about Filipino-American students, multiracial students and other underrepresented groups, spends much of his time working with students on their transition into the University, on leadership development and issues related to multiculturalism.

“I am also so appreciative of my colleagues at The University of Arizona who submitted the nomination, who make the work I do so enjoyable,” he said.

Tucker is associate director for UA's equal opportunity and affirmative action office. She earned her law degree from the UA's James E. Rogers College of Law in 1996.

At the UA, Tucker is responsible for the equal opportunity and affirmative action office's investigation and training unit, which works with University students, faculty and staff.

“The nomination is a reflection of the support of my colleagues at the equal opportunity and affirmative action office," said Tucker, who has been with the UA office since 1998.

"I am so proud of the work that we do on behalf of the University community," Tucker added, "and feel very fortunate to work with such hardworking and dedicated colleagues.”
