Starting today, you should start seeing food donation bins around campus. The UA4Food campaign has begun and employees are encouraged to participate by donating food or money or by becoming a food drive ambassador.

The annual UA4Food campaign, which runs through April 5, has benefited the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona since 2004 and to date has collected 206,830 pounds of food and $3,233,403.56 in donations.

"There's such a great need at this time of year, and there is a large population of people in Pima County who suffer with food insecurity and deprivation," said Sheila McGinnis, UA director of outreach and community partnerships. "The reason we do this every March is that the food supplies are depleted from the holiday season, and people are still suffering from food insecurity. So, we replenish the supplies with the most-needed items."

Those items include peanut butter, cereal, canned meats and canned vegetables.

McGinnis said that typically 2,800 pounds of food are gathered during the drive. This year, the goal is to collect 20 percent more – or 3,360 pounds.

Throughout the UA4Food campaign, donation bins will be set up around campus. UA4Food ambassadors are needed to help coordinate food drive efforts in their departments. For more information on how to volunteer as an ambassador, call McGinnis at 626-4671.

Monetary donations are also accepted. According to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, every dollar donated can be turned into four meals. You can give online here or visit the UA4Food website to find out how to donate by check.

The UA4Food drive will culminate with the Stuff the CatTran event on April 5 from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Members of the campus community will be invited to bring donations to the area near North Cherry Avenue and East University Boulevard in an effort to fill up a CatTran shuttle with food. For those who can't make it to the location, ambassadors of the food drive can schedule pickups at individual offices. This final event is organized by the Classified Staff Council, Parking & Transportation Services and UA Community Relations.

The UA community is invited to continue its donations after the official drive has ended. Those who bring a canned goods to Spring Fling, hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, will receive reduced admission. Spring Fling is April 7-9.
