Launch of Arizona Teachers Academy
Great teachers are essential to a high-quality public education system. In his 2017 State of the State Address, Governor Doug Ducey put forth multiple action items to tackle our state's shortage crisis. To address overwhelming student debt incurred by Arizona teachers, Governor Ducey called on the Arizona Board of Regents and Arizona's public universities and community colleges to create a plan that ensures the next generation of Arizona public school teachers.
On Sept. 26, Governor Ducey will join Arizona's public university enterprise presidents to launch a new era in teacher education through the Arizona Teachers Academy, an innovative strategy to increase the number of qualified teachers in Arizona K-12 classrooms. Academy students who agree to teach in Arizona public schools will receive an annual waiver for tuition and fees associated with their program of study, allowing students to graduate from the universities in teacher education programs with low- to no costs for their education as teachers.
Arizona Board of Regents President Eileen Klein, Arizona State University President Michael Crow, Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng, University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins and Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick will join Governor Ducey to launch the academy. The Governor, Presidents, Chancellor and academy students will be available for media interviews regarding the academy at the conclusion of the program.
