Ty Ferré Named Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer
The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation selected Ty Ferré, professor in the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources [1], as the 2016 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer. As Distinguished Lecturer, Ferré will travel the world to give his talk "Seeing Things Differently: Rethinking the Relationship Between Data, Models and Decision-Making." Ferré will address academic researchers, government scientists and regulators, groundwater professionals, stakeholders and students. He anticipates giving his talk to about 100 different audiences in at least 10 countries on six continents. College of Nursing Nationally Recognized as Hispanic-Serving Health Professions School
The UA College of Nursing [3] is the fourth nursing school in the nation and the first in Arizona to be recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Health Professions School. The UA Health Sciences now has three HSHPS members, as the College of Nursing joins the UA College of Medicine – Tucson [4] and the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health [5]. Membership in the nonprofit HSHPS is granted to schools with a demonstrated commitment to increasing the Hispanic health workforce that will serve and promote the health of Hispanics. UAHS has above-national percentages of Latino and Native American students, and a number of the UA College of Nursing faculty members are engaged in research focused on promoting health equity within Hispanic populations.
Hoshin Gupta Named AMS Robert Horton Lecturer
Hoshin Gupta, professor and Data Assimilation Group leader for the UA Department of Hydrology and Water Resources [6], has been selected as the 2017 Robert E. Horton Lecturer in Hydrology by the American Meteorological Society. The lectureship was named for Horton, whose career was distinguished by his important contributions to the sciences of meteorology and hydrology. Gupta was selected for his research on topics of interest to both hydrologists and meteorologists. Gupta will present the Horton Lecture at the American Meteorological Society's Annual Meeting in New Orleans in January 2017.
Marylyn McEwen Receives American Public Health Association Award
Marylyn McEwen, Gladys E. Sorensen Endowed Professor for diabetes research and education at the UA College of Nursing [7], has received the Ruth B. Freeman award from the Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association. McEwen was honored for her distinguished career in public health education and research. For more than 20 years, she has promoted health in Mexican-Americans living in the U.S.-Mexico border region through community-based interventions and participatory research. She also teaches courses about health and health disparities in the border region and how to decrease health inequities among vulnerable populations. This is McEwen's second award from the APHA.
Marvin J. Slepian and James Wyant Named National Academy of Inventors Fellows
UA researchers Marvin J. Slepian and James Wyant have been elected as fellows of the National Academy of Inventors [8], a professional distinction granted to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. The fellows will be inducted on April 15 during the fifth annual conference of the National Academy of Inventors at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Virginia. Slepian is a professor of medicine and professor and associate department head of biomedical engineering. He started the Arizona Center for Accelerated Biomedical Innovation [9] to serve as a creativity engine where investigators can work with experienced innovators. Wyant is a professor emeritus of optical sciences and electrical and computer engineering, and is founding dean of the UA College of Optical Sciences [10]. He is widely recognized as an expert in the fields of interference, diffraction and optical testing and has co-founded a number of companies, including Wyant Measurement Systems, WYKO Corporation and 4D Technology.
