The start of a new semester is characterized by an increase in the number of people and activities occurring on campus. Inattention during this busy time can increase the possibility that members of the University of Arizona community might make themselves vulnerable to criminal acts.
The University of Arizona Police Department encourages you to adopt an attitude of individual responsibility and awareness, and to utilize good safety practices at all times. Your help and support will help make this a safer and more secure community. Listed below are safety tips you should keep in mind, and remember to immediately report suspicious activity to 9-1-1.
Personal Safety
- Remain alert and aware of your surroundings and the people in your vicinity at all times.
- Talking on cell phones or using other electronic devices when walking, biking, or driving is a distraction and interferes with your ability to stay aware of your surroundings. Save important phones calls and text messages for a later time.
- When going out, tell someone where you are going, with whom, and when you will return. Call if you are going to return late.
- At night travel in well-lighted areas. Avoid "shortcuts" through dark or deserted areas. Use the buddy system and travel with a group.
- Utilize ASUA Safe Ride for a free way to travel between UA buildings and lots. Safe Ride operates Sunday-Thursday from 6:30 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. and Friday from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Call: 520-621-SAFE.
- Parking and Transportation Services Night Cat travels a full circuit around the University of Arizona campus every 30 minutes. The service is free and operates M-F from 6:00pm – 12:30am.
- If you feel threatened or suspect you are being followed, walk toward a well-lighted populated area. Call 9-1-1 immediately!
- Emergency blue light phones give you direct access to UAPD with the push of a button. Know where they are located.
- Do not carry more cash than you need. Avoid "flashing" cash in public. Carry personal items close to your body and maintain a tight hold on them.
Theft Prevention
- Never leave personal property unattended.
- Lock your doors and windows.
- Record serial numbers and take photos of your personal belongings.
- Report suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1
Vehicle Safety
- Even if you will only be away for a minute, do not leave your vehicle unlocked and unattended at any time. It only takes seconds for a crime to occur.
- Do not sit in your vehicle for extended periods of time performing tasks such as talking on the phone. Once you get into your vehicle, lock the doors and leave the area immediately.
- Park in a populated, well-lighted area. Do not park in isolated, dark places. Not only will this deter criminals who might be interested in breaking into or stealing your vehicle, it is also a sound personal safety tactic.
- Do not leave valuable items inside your vehicle. If you must leave these items in your vehicle, secure them out of sight under the seats or in the trunk.
- If your vehicle is registered in the state of Arizona, consider registering it in the Arizona Watch Your Car Program. To obtain more information about this program visit their website at: www.azwatchyourcar.com [1]
- Obtain a steering wheel or bike lock and use it habitually to make your mode of transportation a less attractive target to thieves. Steering wheel and bicycle locks can be obtained at UAPD, located at 1852 E. First St. Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. They are also available at Parking and Transportation Services, located at 1117 E. 6th Street, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Bike locks are $15.00 and Steering wheel locks cost $12.00.
- Consider making an appointment with the UAPD Crime Prevention Unit to have your vehicle identification number etched at no cost. For more information on VIN etching, contact the UAPD Crime Prevention Unit at 520-621-4219.
