Subject: Amendments to Repeating a Course & Grade Replacement Opportunity (GRO) Policies
Date: Nov 22, 2022

In Spring 2022 under recommendation from the University Academic Advising Council (UAAC), the Office of the Registrar proposed updates to the Grade Replacement Opportunity (GRO) policy and the Repeating a Course policy.

The updated Repeating a Course and Grade Replacement Policy eliminates the cap that limits a student's access to GRO once they've earned more than 60 units, as recommended by UAAC. Additionally, the formerly separate policies on Repeating a Course and Grade Replacement Opportunity have been combined.

The updated policy was approved by the Undergraduate Council, Graduate Council, Undergraduate College Academic Administrators Council, Graduate College Academic Administrators Council, and the Faculty Senate during the spring and fall 2022 semesters.

The updated Repeating a Course and Grade Replacement policy can be found online.

The updated policy is effective Spring 2023.

Updates to the Repeating a Course and Grade Replacement policy (full policy can be found in the General Catalog):

  • The cap that limits a student's access to GRO once they've earned more than 60 units has been eliminated. Students will be able to GRO courses regardless of how many university credits they have earned.
  • The information on repeating a course has been removed as a separate policy and incorporated in the GRO policy.
  • The consolidated policy is reformatted with modified language for clarity.

Justification/Rationale

  • The elimination of the 60-unit cap for GRO is intended to give students equal opportunity, whether they started as a first-year student at the institution or transferred coursework in later in their undergraduate career. This change was requested by UAAC.
  • The Repeating a Course policy has been removed as its own policy and combined with the Grade Replacement Opportunity policy, as GRO depends on a student's ability to repeat courses.
