Annual Body Smart Day Features Expo and Documentary

Gale Welter Coleman
February 13, 2017

Body Smart, a student-led initiative of the UA Campus Health Service, will hold its 11th annual Body Smart Day on Feb. 22.

The day will begin with the Body Smart Expo, on the UA Mall from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Expo will feature interactive activities and giveaways from student and community groups, as well as Zumba and Wilbur at noon, back rubs, henna tattoos and therapy dogs.

At 6 p.m., in the Gallagher Theater, there will be a screening of the new feature-length documentary, "Embrace", which explores the global issue of body dissatisfaction, inspiring us to change the way we feel about ourselves and our bodies. This screening is free and open to the community.

During the Expo, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in interactive activities that promote positive body image, support healthy self-care, and encourage gratitude and kindness.

Body Smart Day is held annually during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. The mission of the Body Smart Initiative is to enhance self-worth and positive body image among all UA students. Students are challenged daily to be perfect in a culture that ties attaining unrealistic ideals to their happiness. Our goal is to combat this way of thinking by building self-compassion and confidence that we are enough.

"The theme of the Body Smart Expo is 'Celebrate You!,' which recognizes that each person is different, and their uniqueness is something to embrace and be proud of," said UA student, Charlotte Musgrove, student coordinator for the Body Smart Initiative.
