Subject: Annual Security and Fire Safety Reports
Date: Oct 01, 2021

In accordance with the federal Clery Act, the University of Arizona Annual Security and Fire Safety Reports were distributed and posted online on Friday, October 1, 2021. The Clery Act is a consumer protection law that aims to provide transparency around campus crime policy and statistics.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Reports are not just about reporting crime and fire statistics, but they provide an explanation of more than 115+ institutional policies and procedures that are designed to enhance transparency and promote campus safety. Whether a laptop is stolen, or someone is assaulted, it is imperative that you know what to do, who to call, and what to expect once they file a report.

The reports and additional information on the Clery Act are available at https://clery.arizona.edu.

What information is available in the reports?

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Reports (ASR) contain valuable information for all members of the University community including:

  • Campus security policies, including access and maintenance
  • To whom a crime or other emergency should be reported
  • The authority and jurisdiction of the campus police/public safety personnel
  • How the institution will communicate with you in the event of a serious crime or other emergency that poses a threat to the health or safety of our community
  • The crime prevention, security awareness, sexual misconduct, and other safety- and security-related education programs offered by various campus departments
  • The institution's policies, procedures, and response to reports of sexual misconduct
  • Crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years
  • Procedures that are in place if a residential student is reported to be missing
  • Fire safety policies, fire drills, and fire evacuation procedures
  • Descriptions of the fire safety systems in each residential facility
  • Statistics regarding residential facility fires

What can I do to help create a safe campus?

  • Familiarize yourself with the contents of the annual security and fire safety report.  It contains important safety- and security-related information that you can use to help keep yourself and others safe.
  • Read all media releases and timely warnings distributed by UAPD and follow any instructions or crime prevention tips they contain.
  • Participate in a safety presentation by the UAPD Community Engagement Unit. Visit the UAPD website for more information.
  • If you are the victim of or witness to a crime, report it promptly to UAPD by dialing 911 or 520-621-8273 (non-emergency). If you do not wish to involve law enforcement, reports can be made confidentially by contacting the Office of Institutional Equity at 520-621-9449. More information on confidential reporting is available on the OIE website equity.arizona.edu.
  • If you become aware of a residential student who might be missing, immediately report that to UAPD by dialing 911 or 520-621-8273 (non-emergency).
  • If you see evidence of a fire that has already been extinguished in an area where it may not have set off a fire alarm (e.g., you see evidence that someone lit a trash can on fire, you see evidence of a piece of paper on a bulletin board that was set on fire, etc.), immediately report that to UAPD by dialing 911 or 520-621-8273 (non-emergency), so that the incident can be documented and investigated if it is not clear that the fire was set accidentally.

How can I report crimes and incidences that occur on campus?

You are encouraged to promptly and accurately report all suspicious activity and crimes to UAPD or other local law enforcement. Crimes and other emergencies can be reported to UAPD 24 hours a day by calling 911 or 520-621-UAPD (8273) for non-emergencies, or coming to the UAPD station at 1852 E. First St.

Victims of crimes within the University's jurisdiction who do not want to pursue action within the criminal justice system or the University's judicial system are encouraged to confidentially report the incident for inclusion in the annual security report, daily crime log, and possible issuance of a timely warning.
