Arizona Supreme Court to Visit the James E. Rogers College of Law

College of Law
October 23, 2017

As part of its ongoing public education effort, the Arizona Supreme Court will hold oral arguments during its annual visit to the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law on Nov. 7. This court visit is hosted by the College of Law's Rehnquist Center.

Seating is available first to those who have registered. Others are welcome to observe on a first-come, first-served basis as space is available. Arguments will be heard in two cases:

Case 1: 2-2:40 p.m. State of Arizona v. Hon. Gates/Apolinar Altamirano

Case 2: 3-3:40 p.m. Mertola v. Alberto Santos and Arlene Santos

All case materials, as well as case summaries, can be found at this link.

When registering, you will be able to choose whether you want to observe Case 1, Case 2, or both cases. A break will follow Case 1 so that those audience members unable to attend both arguments may transition in and out of the courtroom.

A question and answer period will follow Case 2. At this time, the judges will take questions from the audience, though they will be unable to discuss anything related to either Case 1 or Case 2.

Check-in for Case 1 starts at 1:15, and check-in for Case 2 starts at 2:15. We encourage attendees to allow plenty of time for check-in, as there is no courtroom entry once court is in session.

Important: Photo ID required for courtroom entry. No backpacks, purses, or electronic equipment are permitted in the courtroom. We cannot offer secure storage for your belongings, so please make arrangements ahead of time. Phones are permitted in the courtroom, but must be turned off. No food or drink allowed. No t-shirts, shorts, hats, sunglasses, or flip flops permitted. Professional dress encouraged.
