Subject: Call for Applications: WAC Faculty Fellows 22-23
Date: Feb 01, 2022

We are reaching out to faculty with experience teaching Writing Emphasis courses to participate in the 2022–2023 WAC Fellows program, an initiative funded by allocations from the Federal CARES Act funds for Hispanic Serving Institutions and deemed to be aligned with the University of Arizona’s institutional strategic priorities and mission as Hispanic Serving Institution.

The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Fellows program offers a $1,000 stipend for faculty to learn strategies for teaching writing in the disciplines through an antiracist lens. The training includes a two-week workshop emphasizing anti-racist writing pedagogy, including effective assignment design, best practices for writing in the disciplines, and the role of institutional assessment of student writing in writing in the discipline coursework. Throughout the WAC fellows program, we will explore writing courses as learning environments that privilege equity over equality, foster complex conversations, and empower all to “respect diversity and uphold the right of students to their own language” (CCCC Statement and AWAC Statement).

What sets the University of Arizona's WAC Fellows program apart is the integration of embedded writing tutors who will be assigned to your course. These are College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)-certified tutors from the Writing Center who will attend your class, where they can lead workshops, provide in situ writing support, and help facilitate discussions. Additionally, they will be available during 'office hours' each week to provide writing consultations to your students. The tutors will also meet with you on a biweekly basis to develop an advanced knowledge of your writing assignments, offer insights on what students are struggling with, and act as a liaison between you and your students. The program will provide guidance on how to best structure your course and writing assignments to utilize this support. Here is what a student had to say about the embedded tutoring last year: "I love that this service was available and I will definitely use it again for future writing assignments in other classes."

Program Description:

  • The WAC Fellows summer program offers a $1,000 stipend for you to participate in both asynchronous and synchronous activities for an estimated 20 hours over two weeks:

    • Aug. 1-5
    • Aug. 8-12
  • Fellows will learn about antiracist WAC tools and work to revise at least one writing assignment through an antiracist lens.
  • Fellows will learn how to integrate embedded writing tutoring as a valuable resource in their course.

Eligibility

  • Faculty fellows must be teaching a Writing Emphasis course during the 22/23 AY and have at least one writing assignment they will design or revise during the workshop.
  • Fellows must be available for both the asynchronous and synchronous activities outlined in the description above.
