Subject: Classroom Tech Updates for Fall 2023
Date: Apr 18, 2023

Maintaining the quality of available technology and fostering positive user experience in Centrally Scheduled Classrooms is the focus of the Classroom Technology Services (CTS) department. In the ongoing effort to improve services, the Classroom Committee is announcing upcoming changes to available technology, and new requirements for the use of personal technology equipment.

Retiring Old Technology

BEGINNING FALL 2023

The following technologies will no longer be available for use in Centrally Scheduled Classrooms:

  • 16mm Film Projectors
  • VHS players/recorders
  • Carousel Slide Projectors
  • Cassette Tape Players/Recorders
  • Compact Disc Players
  • Laserdisc Players
  • Transparency Projectors

DVD and BLU-RAY players will remain available by request* only.
*Requests can be made by emailing UITS-cts@email.arizona.edu or calling 520-621-3852.

BEGINNING FALL 2024

The following Technology will no longer be available for use in centrally scheduled classrooms:

  • DVD and BLU-RAY Players

Once old technology is retired, instructional content must be in an online streaming format to be used in the classroom. The University Library can assist with acquiring digital material in a streaming format (if available). They can also advise instructors on the legality of digitizing material for use in the classroom that is not otherwise commercially available in a streaming format.

  • For assistance on copyright from the University library contact the Scholarly Communication & Copyright Librarian at: library@arizona.edu.
  • For assistance with streaming video, please use the streaming request form or contact streaming@lib.arizona.edu.

Minimum Requirements for Bringing Your Own Device

It is highly recommended that instructors use the computers provided in the classrooms. These computers have been optimized and maintained to operate efficiently and reliably with the classroom technology. Instructors can access instructional materials through D2L or cloud storage over the internet, or they can bring their own personal storage device.

BEGINNING FALL 2023

If an instructor prefers to bring their own device to the classroom for instruction, the following requirements must be met to connect the device to classroom technology:

WINDOWS COMPUTER
Operating System: Windows 10 or newer Ɨ
Available Ports*: HDMI

APPLE COMPUTER
Operating System: OS 13 or newer Ɨ
Available Ports*: HDMI

Please note: Due to Digital Copy Protection software included on Apple Computers after 2018, there are occasional issues with ‘Bring Your Own’ Apple devices successfully connecting to classroom technology. It is recommended that instructors try out their Apple device in the classroom they will be using at least a few days before classes begin and contact CTS if they encounter challenges.

* If the computer does not have the appropriate port available then the instructor must provide an appropriate adapter. Not all adapters perform equally well; however one brand that has been reliable and more consistent with connecting to classroom technology is CABLE MATTERS. As CTS identifies more brands that provide reliable performance when connecting with classroom technology, they will be added to a comprehensive list which can be made available upon request. Please note that the use of adapters introduces a potential point of failure. Although an adapter might be on the recommended list, this does not guarantee proper function.

Ɨ It is recommended that the user become familiar with the video and audio settings on their personal device, as adjustments on the device might be necessary to interface with classroom technology.

Devices Not Permitted To Connect

THE FOLLOWING DEVICES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CONNECT TO CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY THROUGH A PHYSICAL PORT AND WILL NOT BE SUPPORTED:

  • Any computer that does not meet minimum tech requirements
  • Phones (iPhone, Android, etc…)
  • iPads or other tablets

If you would like to connect one of these devices to classroom technology you could do so by establishing a Zoom meeting, connnecting your device to the Zoom meeting and sharing your screen.

The Classroom Technology Services (CTS) department provides reliable, quality, support for University Centrally Scheduled Classrooms, to reduce negative impact on classroom instruction due to technology use issues.

How CTS provides support:

  • ensures classroom equipment is maintained and technology is updated
  • provides equipment use that is simple and intuitive
  • guidance and instruction available upon request
  • reduces possible points of failure
  • provides timely, outstanding, support when needed

If you have questions about these new policies, please reach out to the Classroom Committee or CTS Manager, Brandon Howell at: UITS-cts@email.arizona.edu.
