The UArizona Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the Sankofa Black Staff and Faculty Association are proud to invite nominations for three awards to be presented at the 2023 Visionary/Make Your Mark Awards Ceremony. UArizona staff and faculty that have proven their excellence in diversity, inclusion and mentoring will be selected from submitted nominations and honored at this event. Please consider recognizing a deserving faculty and/or staff member by nominating them for one of the following awards:

The Edith Sayre Auslander Vision Awards

The Commission on the Status of Women created the Vision Awards in 1999 to honor leaders who manage their units in ways that exemplify the vision set out by the Arizona Board of Regents Commission in 1990. University staff, faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students, and administrators are encouraged to nominate individuals who cultivate diversity and advance the CSW goals relating to 1) campus climate, 2) career and professional development, and 3) issues of equity and inclusion. Two awards are presented. To learn more regarding the criteria and eligibility of these awards and to nominate, please click here: Edith Sayre Auslander Vision Award Nomination Form

The Maria Teresa Velez Outstanding Mentoring Award

The Outstanding Mentoring Award recognizes individuals with an outstanding commitment to mentoring within The University of Arizona. This prestigious award honors and celebrates people who are making a difference through mentoring and who have significantly demonstrated a commitment above and beyond, through their individual mentoring accomplishments, their creation of high quality mentoring experiences for others, and their efforts contributing to building a mentoring culture at the University of Arizona. Two awards are presented, one for faculty and one for staff. Buffalo Soldier Make Your Mark Award

The Sankofa Black Staff and Faculty Association seeks to recognize outstanding faculty and staff at the University of Arizona through the inaugural Buffalo Soldier Make Your Mark Award. This award honors those who stand out for making a difference for Black lives on campus. They may make a difference in their own department or may lead efforts against anti-Black racism institution wide.  Their work may directly impact students or improve the lives of faculty and staff. Whatever they do, they make a difference at UArizona. The Buffalo Soldier Make Your Mark Award is given to one faculty member of any rank or track and one staff member each year. The Buffalo Soldiers of the all Black 10th Cavalry regiment left an enduring legacy in the Southwest. Given their nickname by the Cheyenne and other Plains tribes, the Buffalo Soldiers were among the most loyal, decorated soldiers of their time, participating in at least 177 conflicts. The Buffalo Soldiers were also among the first protectors of the land destined to become our National Parks! Their work preserving public lands laid the foundation for the creation of park rangers.
