Employee Health Screening

Life & Work Connections
April 17, 2017

Health Screening at the Life & Work Connections Office.

May 18, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

LWC Employee Wellness & Health Promotion strives to help you with wellness goals. Evaluating your current health can assist you in developing strategies to realize and maintain those goals. LWC Employee Wellness offers free or low-cost screenings to all UA employees eligible for full benefits.

The metabolic syndrome screening evaluates five data points that can help you assess your risk for chronic disease. Having three of these five factors out of the norm can significantly increase the risk for diabetes and heart disease. The metabolic syndrome screening assesses:

  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Fasting total cholesterol and HDL (good cholesterol)
  • Fasting triglycerides
  • Fasting blood glucose
  • Waist circumference and body composition

The metabolic syndrome screening takes 15 to 20 minutes. Fasting for nine hours prior to the screening is required. The blood tests are done with one finger-stick. You get immediate results and have the benefit of a brief, confidential consultation with a registered dietitian nutritionist.

If you have three or more of the metabolic syndrome factors out of the norm, the good news is improvement is possible with better food choices, more of your favorite activity, a little weight loss and managing stress better. Life & Work Connections recommends follow-up with your primary care provider and offers coaching and resources for those who have one or more indicators of metabolic syndrome. Follow-up screening is available for you to monitor your progress.

If you are concerned about your risk for diabetes you can also sign up for a UA Life & Work Connections Diabetes Risk Screening. This screening will assess your risk for diabetes and measure your long-term glucose levels (A1C) which does not require fasting. In addition, we will measure other related health tests including blood pressure, Total Cholesterol and HDL, waist circumference, heart endurance (step-test). We will go over your results at that time and provide nutrition/fitness and stress/sleep consultations. This Diabetes Risk Screening costs $10.

Individuals can schedule an Employee Health Screening at the Life & Work Connections office using the online registration process at https://lifework.arizona.edu/. Available dates, times and locations are listed under Appointment Time. Appointments last approximately 45 minutes.

When complete, click "Sign Up." You will receive an automatic email message confirming your registration and a reminder email three days before your appointment. Can't make one of these times? Please call us at 621-2493. Don't forget, if you have more than 12 colleagues at your UA workplace who are interested in having a screening, we'll come to you with a "Mini" Health Screening!
