Ann Weaver Hart, President

Subject: Executive Office of the President Restructuring

Date: January 25, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

After wide consultation and building on the recommendations and needs of the University of Arizona identified through last semester’s planning process, I am reorganizing the Executive Office of the President at the UA to focus efforts more directly on strategic action and implementation to assure that we do not waver in our execution of change and development.

I write today to announce that, starting next week, Dr. J.C. Mutchler will join the Executive Office of the President team as Executive Director and Vice President. Dr. Mutchler will be the chief operating officer overseeing all ABOR-related responsibilities and the supervision of the staff. Further, the team will be refocused to include a Chief Strategy Officer and Analyst. Based on Chair of the Faculty Dr. Wanda Howell's recommendation, Dr. Mutchler will continue to serve as the Secretary of the Faculty Senate and as Chair of SPBAC until elections are held to fill these critical roles. He also will continue to co-chair, with Provost Andrew Comrie, the process through which we will finalize the integration of the academic, campus and financial plans into our overall strategic plan and complete his spring semester teaching assignment. Special thanks to Faculty Chair Dr. Wanda Howell for her counsel and support during this transition.

This change in focus in the Executive Office of the President will require an internal reallocation of resources and restructuring of the office in order to find efficiencies by consolidating some duties currently performed in the president’s office. In addition, given the number of substantive relationships coming to fruition with our global partners, and Suzanne Ornelas' international background, she will be joining the Office of Global Initiatives, focusing on the management and implementation of complex, multi-institutional projects.

I continue to feel increasingly excited about the bright future of our great university and grateful for the privilege of being a part of the UA team.

Best wishes,
Ann Weaver Hart
