'Fight the Bite' and Prevent Mosquito-Borne Illnesses
A wonderful Summer monsoon season has ended. However, the mosquitos also enjoyed our monsoon rains this year! This means it’s important to prevent West Nile Virus and other mosquito-transmitted illnesses (e.g. Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika) by applying Pima County Health Department’s Fight the Bite! Day and Night helpful tips, and information on managing mosquitos in floodplains and ponds.
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus endemic in Arizona mosquitoes since 2003, with the season peaking from May through October (although likely to run later this year due to the late monsoonal rains. In Arizona so far this WNV season, there have been 256 confirmed or probable human WNV cases with 14 deaths. Pima County has had 9 confirmed or probable West Nile Virus cases.
Facilities Management prevents mosquito breeding on campus by treating outdoor areas of standing water with a safe mosquito larvicide. We ask the campus community to help fight the bite by reporting standing water and mosquito concerns to your building manager or to Facilities Management at 520-621-3000.
