Invitation: Meet With Finalists for Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police

To: University Community

Lisa Rulney
Senior Vice President for Business Affairs & CFO

Subject: Invitation: Meet With Finalists for Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police

Date: January 7, 2022

On behalf of the search advisory committee for our next Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police, we are excited to share that with the conclusion of interviews in late December, the University will be hosting the following finalists for two-day, on-campus recruitment and interview visits:

  • Jason Brei – January 13-14
  • Andrew Black – January 18-19
  • Paula Balafas – January 20-21
  • Craig Stone – January 24-25

As part of the agenda for each candidate, we invite you to meet with each of them. To learn a bit about the candidates before they arrive, check out their application materials.

Three of the candidates are from outside of Tucson. These visits are, therefore, as much opportunities to recruit and show off our amazing University community/Arizona as they are opportunities for us to ensure we ultimately select the best finalist. To support both facets, we aim to provide as many in-person experiences as possible, while also helping to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. So, there are a mix of events that are in person, hybrid, or Zoom only.

Their visits will consist of a variety of small, targeted-constituent meetings and topic-specific mini-sessions open to those involved in each subject matter; Outlook invitations will be sent to those groups. Additionally, each visit includes an open-to-all Zoom webinar – with a brief introductory presentation by the candidate, followed by a Q&A session.

Sign up for the open-to-all Zoom webinars*, being held from 4:30-6 p.m.:

*Please share these sign-up links with any interested parties.

Given the complex scheduling and tight timelines, we appreciate your willingness to take some brief time out of your busy schedules.

As the position profile states, we are looking for an individual who will serve as the primary steward for our safety and security functions and is responsible for: leadership, mentoring, direction and management for the University of Arizona Police Department, including officer recruitment, training and management; patrol operations; event management; investigations; community outreach and policing; crime prevention strategies; crime statistic and federal compliance reporting; budgeting and fiscal oversight; and crisis and emergency response management.

Our community – guided by Compassion, Adaptation, and Inclusion, three of the University's core values – is embracing the opportunity to build upon the great progress of the past, to ensure that the University of today and of tomorrow remains a safe, secure, and inclusive and equitable environment for all to learn, work and seek out the as-yet unknown. And the role of Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police is essential to leading that transformational positive change.

So, equally as important to a candidate's success in the role is their ability to navigate (and positively add to) our culture – as they seek to realize our collectively informed reimagining of campus safety and security. We are not looking for someone who simply checks all the boxes on the position posting; we want to identify the ideal team player. As such, we would like you to help us determine how each candidate's values align with ours, as well as whether their subject matter expertise and experience will allow them to master the tasks associated with the role specifically here at the University of Arizona.

Afterwards we will share a short online evaluation form for you to share your thoughts. All comments will be held in strict confidence.

Thank you for taking the time to engage in this important endeavor!
