Subject: Leadership Updates from the Office of the Provost
Date: Jan 20, 2022

I am pleased to announce organizational updates and events for the spring semester.

  • Brent White, Vice President for Global Affairs, Dean of Global Locations, and Professor of Law, has accepted the role of provost at Golden Gate University starting in March 2022. He has graciously agreed to support the transition by serving as a Special Advisor for Global Affairs until March. During his time as Vice President of Global Affairs and Dean of Global locations, Brent has led UArizona to greatly increase our global reach, in alignment with the Pillar 4 – Arizona Global component of our 2018 Strategic Plan. Please join me in wishing him great success as he departs for this new leadership role.
  • John Paul Jones III has accepted the appointment of Dean of Global Education for an interim period. He also will retain his appointment as Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences until he steps down step from that position on July 1, 2022, as previously shared. My sincere thanks to JP for stepping up to the challenges of continuing to grow our global programs.
  • Ivy Banks, Associate Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, has accepted an exciting new role as vice president for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at Xavier University in Ohio. In her capacity as AVP for Diversity and Inclusion here at the University, Ivy has initiated a university-wide process to develop a Diversity Strategic Plan – work that we plan to continue robustly, following the exemplary path that she has laid out for us. Thank you, Ivy, for your tremendous contributions to the University. We wish you every success in your new leadership role.
  • Maribel Alvarez has accepted the appointment of Associate Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion for an interim period. She is a well-known champion and advocate in this vital area of our operations. Maribel has held positions such as the Jim Griffith Chair in Public Folklore at the Southwest Center and Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Maribel already has hit the ground running by making it a priority to understand all the programs underway in the department to ensure a smooth transition. Please help us welcome Maribel to this new role.
  • Dean searches for the Eller College of Management, College of Education and College of Social and Behavioral Sciences are underway, and I am deeply grateful to the many faculty, staff and students who have agreed to serve on the search committees.
