MCAT Prep Courses Now Available Through UA THINK TANK

The THINK TANK
August 29, 2017

MCAT prep courses are the newest offering from the THINK TANK, which delivers prep courses for a number of college and graduate school entrance exams. Seven sessions of MCAT prep are available in the 2017-18 academic year. Each provides 42 hours of classroom instruction (12 sessions) and two practice tests on the centrally located University of Arizona campus. The $900 course fee includes the textbook, official AAMC study materials, and access to instructor office hours.

Scores from the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), developed and administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), are required by almost all U.S. medical schools as part of the admission application. Few universities offer comprehensive preparation opportunities for the MCAT, despite the highly competitive nature of medical school admissions. Prospective applicants often turn to for-profit companies for help with test prep.

Through the THINK TANK, the University of Arizona is able to offer this resource not only to current students, but to the entire Tucson community. The original curriculum was developed on campus using official AAMC test prep resources. At just $900, the course is very competitively priced, and UA students, staff, and alumni receive a $50 discount.

In addition to the exceptional value, the THINK TANK's prep courses provide other benefits over mass-produced and online alternatives. Because all instruction takes place live and in-person, each course is tailored to meet the specific needs of participants. Instructors adapt their teaching to participants’ various learning styles. Outside of the classroom, instructor office hours allow for one-on-one support to clarify and reinforce course material.

The THINK TANK administrators decided to develop the MCAT prep course when they became aware of an unmet need on campus. According to Marco Ortiz, Associate Director of the THINK TANK, "This prep course is a much-needed service for our UA students. Taking a preparation course is often perceived and recommended as a best practice for aspiring med students. However, many students cannot afford the high price of external offerings. As a result, we are determined to provide a high-quality program with a much lower price point along with in-person instruction and personalized support. We look forward to serving UA students and the Tucson community."
