The phone call authentication option for authenticating NetID+ (DUO) will no longer be available to staff as of June 30, 2020. The option will be removed for faculty and students October 1, 2020.

Staff who use the phone call option should ensure they have NetID+ options now.

NETID+ OPTIONS AND SUPPORT

  • DUO App: Free to download to your smartphone and/or tablet, and free to you and the University to use. The 24/7 can assist with setup.
  • Feitian Passcode Fob: Incurs purchase price, but free to you and the University to use. Buy a preset fob via the University of Arizona BookStores so you can just enter the serial number at the NetID+ website for setup. 
  • Yubikey USB Token: Incurs purchase price, but free to you and the University to use. The 24/7 can assist with setup.
  • SMS Text: Fee to the University per text, which provides 10 codes. Enter your phone number at the NetID+ website for setup.
  • Printed passcodes: Free to get from the NetID+ website and free to use. A good backup for a lost or changed phone, or when traveling.

If you have an unusual situation with NetID+ authentications that needs to be addressed, please share your concerns with your IT staff so that appropriate solutions can be found.

BACKGROUND

NetID+ was instituted as a mandatory security measure in 2018 and has been a tremendous success in securing campus data. Compromised information was reduced 95% with this implementation.

 The initial rollout included as many options as possible, including those which incurred a cost for each use.

The current financial situation at the University of Arizona is motivating all units to review areas where cost savings can be achieved. UITS has discovered that the cost for the Phone Call option is reaching over $70,000 per year. UITS is removing this option over summer and fall 2020, as part of its efforts to be fiscally responsible.
