Often, being the caregiver of someone with dementia can lead to heightened levels of anxiety, stress and depression – all on top of trying to handle many of the needs of their loved ones. The Psychology Department's Behavioral Health Clinic's caregiver support group aims to support you "putting your oxygen mask on first" by providing techniques to help you care for yourself throughout your time as a caregiver and beyond.

The caregiver support group is an educational skill-building supportive therapy group. In this group, you will learn about various neurocognitive disorders and skills to cope with the difficult thoughts and emotions that surround being a caregiver of someone with dementia. During group meetings, you will also have an opportunity to share and hear from others in the group.

Each session will focus on better understanding a particular neurodegenerative condition and will introduce a particular therapeutic skill. Group members will be provided access to a series of short educational videos that introduce the concepts and skills that will be taught in each session. During group meetings, members will have the opportunity to discuss and share their thoughts and emotions they are experiencing while also practicing these newly learned skills.

Session Topics:

  • Neurodegenerative Conditions: An Overview || Separating From our Thoughts: Defusion
  • Alzheimer's Disease || The Power of Acceptance
  • Vascular Dementia || Being in the Present Moment
  • Parkinson's Disease || Understanding Your Values

All group meetings are 50 minutes and run by University of Arizona Clinical Psychology Ph.D. graduate students who are closely supervised by licensed clinical psychologists.

Group sessions begin in September. Interested in joining? Visit our website for more information and to started!
