One Community: A Procession and Vigil of Affirmation

Gary Rhoades, professor and director, Center for the Study of Higher Education
December 4, 2016

This is a procession and vigil of affirmation, as one community, of our shared values and commitment to all members of our community.

It is a procession, not a protest, and not a party political rally. It is a public expression and affirmation of our support for the right of all community members to pursue and engage in their work without threat of or being targeted for violence, intimidation, or exclusion because of their identity.

We value: Every community member—our excellence and strength lies in our diversity; Academic freedom in instruction, research, extramural speech, and in speech about our institution's policies, for all members of our intellectual community; Science and multiple knowledges, forms of inquiry, and social critique.

We are: International—of many nations and immigration statuses; Intersectional—of many identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, ethnicities, disability/non-disability statuses, and nations of origin; Interdependent—an assault on one of us is an assault on all of us, and we are moving forward, together.

We will process from the Cactus Garden on the Mall to the area in front of the Arizona State Museum, where we will have a vigil at which some students and faculty will speak. Please join us in a family friendly, affirming event.
