Notice of Adoption of PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING POLICY (INTERIM)

University of Arizona

Notice of Proposed Policy Revision:

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING POLICY (INTERIM)

Pursuant to the University Policy-Making Policy, the following action is proposed:

NOTICE OF ADOPTION OF PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING POLICY (INTERIM)

SUMMARY: In order to create a safe and secure workplace and to ensure that University of Arizona employees are qualified to perform the jobs for which the University hires them, the University will conduct pre-employment screening, including criminal background checks on all finalists.

This interim policy outlines the requirements for pre-employment screening, including criminal record background checks, for all University employees and designated campus colleague affiliates, associates and volunteers.

The purpose of the interim policy is to increase campus safety and security measures. The President announced the expansion of the current employee criminal record background check process to include all Graduate Assistants/Associates (GAs) hired or experiencing a qualified job change effective July 1, 2023 or later. Currently, fingerprint-based criminal record background checks are conducted on GAs in security-sensitive positions or who disclose prior felony convictions. This revision will authorize name-based criminal background checks to be conducted on all GAs holding non-security sensitive positions.

Having been approved on an interim basis, this Policy is in effect as of July 1, 2023, while feedback is collected for the creation of a permanent policy.

A copy of the revised policy (tracked changes and clean version) is available on the University Policies website.

Members of the University community are invited to submit written comments.

All comments must be received by close of business on Friday, September 29, 2023.

Please note: Policy feedback is available to the Policy Office, Policy Sponsor, and elected shared governance representatives, upon request, for policies impacting the populations they represent.
