Notice of Proposed Policy Revision

University of Arizona

Notice of Proposed Policy Revisions:

HOLIDAYS POLICY

and

UNIVERSITY CLOSURE COMPENSATION POLICY

Pursuant to the University Policy-Making Policy, the following action is proposed:

ADOPTION OF POLICY REVISIONS TO: HOLIDAYS POLICY and UNIVERSITY CLOSURE COMPENSATION POLICY

SUMMARY:

Holidays Policy:

The purpose of this Policy is to designate recognized University holidays. The University is limited to 10 holidays per year according to ABOR policy.

The President instituted Juneteenth as a new holiday beginning in 2023. In order to accommodate the new Juneteenth holiday, the day after Thanksgiving will be removed from the list of holidays and will be designated as a closure day in the University Closure Compensation policy.

University Closure Compensation Policy:

The University observes an annual scheduled period of University closure time for the day after the Thanksgiving holiday and the period of closure time between the Christmas holidays and the New Year's holiday. The President or the President’s designee may identify certain buildings and/or areas that will be exempt from the University closure based on a business need to remain open. When the University is closed, most employees do not report to work and do not receive regular pay. This Policy provides appropriate compensation.

This update is being requested in conjunction with an update to the Holidays Policy that will add Juneteenth as a University holiday and remove the day after Thanksgiving as a holiday. The policy change provides a paid day off in the way of a closure day for the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

A copy of the revised policies are available at the University Policies website.

Members of the University community are invited to submit written comments.

All comments must be received by close of business on September 23, 2022.

Please note: Stakeholder feedback is available to the Policy Office, Policy Sponsor, and elected shared governance representatives, upon request, for policies impacting the populations they represent.
