Subject: Shan Sutton Appointed Dean of Libraries

Date: February 22, 2017

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Shan C. Sutton as Dean of University Libraries, effective February 27, 2017. Shan will report to me in my new position of Vice President for Information Strategy & University Libraries.

For the past 18 months, Shan has served as Vice Dean of University Libraries, providing essential leadership in a broad range of areas, including new collaborations with campus partners around student learning and library spaces as well as expanding library support for the UA research enterprise. He also provided administrative oversight for several Libraries departments including the Office of Digital Innovation and Stewardship, Special Collections, Access and Information Services, and Facilities.

Before joining the University of Arizona, Shan served as Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication at Oregon State University. His administrative experience also includes positions as Associate Dean and Head of Special Collections at the University of the Pacific. Shan is an alumnus of Harvard University's Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians, and the UCLA Senior Fellows program for academic library leaders. He is nationally known for his expertise in scholarly communication. In his role as Chair of the Research and Scholarly Environment Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries, Shan was active in advocacy efforts and setting an agenda around open access for the Association. Shan holds a master's degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona, and a master's degree in Humanities from Wright State University.

Shan states, "I am thrilled to be appointed Dean of University Libraries at the University of Arizona. I’ve seen first-hand how the Libraries are an integral part of this University's success, and how they can serve as a catalyst in areas such as expanding public access to faculty research, and engaging students with new technologies. I look forward to providing leadership that will enable us to reach even greater levels of impact on student learning, faculty research, and community engagement in support of our land grant mission."

We are very fortunate to have Shan in the Dean role and I’m excited to work with him in this new way.

Please join me in congratulating Shan on his appointment to Dean of University Libraries.
