Student Employment Opportunities with Academic Success & Achievement

March 20, 2013

Academic Success & Achievement has launched its annual student employment recruitment and application period for the 2013-2014 academic year. Applications will be accepted through noon March 29. The application is a joint application for all of the positions available within the New Start Summer Program, the PASS Probation Program, Prodigy, Student Affairs Outreach and Student Support Services/TRiO. Students are able to pick up a printed copy in the ASA office on the lower level of the Robert L. Nugent Building or access the online application by visiting http://bit.ly/WRsGNj.

ASA serves to engage students through a series of programs and services designed to assist in their academic success and retention at the University of Arizona. ASA provides a focus on retention and success of underrepresented students with expanding contributions to all undergraduates. It is a dynamic area in which collaboration between existing programs and new innovative student experiences are built to promote cultural change on the UA campus that will foster a more interdependent, academic, ethical, safe and connected community.

To learn more about the positions available within the office, students are encouraged to attend an interest session to learn how to create a competitive application and interview. First-time applicants are heavily encouraged to attend one of these sessions. The dates for these events are:

  • 2 p.m. March 25
  • 3 p.m. March 25
  • 3:30 p.m. March 26

All sessions are located in Career Services in the Student Union Memorial Center, Suite 411.

Students wishing to apply for multiple positions need only complete one ASA employment application.

Available positions:

  • New Start Summer Program (20-30 hours per week). This program provides a six-week transition experience for incoming college freshmen. The New Start Summer Program hires about 20 peer advisers, seven resident assistants and 15 English, math and anthropology tutors for the summer. Peer advisers facilitate a daily college success workshop for 15 students and provide one-on-one assistance to program participants throughout the summer. Resident assistants live on campus in a University residence hall and receive a stipend, helping ensure safety and provide social and educational programming for program participants. Tutors play an essential role in promoting positive perceptions of tutoring among program participants through active partnerships with course instructors in the classroom, development and facilitation of topical workshops, facilitating study groups and staffing the New Start drop-in tutoring center. Please note: Because of the nature of the program, New Start summer staff should not plan on traveling, taking courses or taking time off between May 23-July 19. Contact Mary Frances Kuper at mmiller@email.arizona.edu or 520-621-5787.
  • PASS – Pathway to Academic Student Success (10-15 hours per week). The PASS program helps students in need of academic assistance with peer advising, discussion groups, individualized plans and continuous support to improve students' persistence toward graduation from the UA. As a peer adviser, you will be paired with 15-25 student participants currently on academic probation to work with through the semester. Required duties include facilitating small-group discussions, conducting one-on-one meetings with assigned students, working under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and decision-making and engaging in data entry. Our goal is to identify individual student needs and develop success plans that provide learning strategies, campus resources and personal skills to meet those needs. Contact Brandi Burke at brandiburke@email.arizona.edu or 520-621-8554.
  • Prodigy (10 hours per week). Prodigy is a goal-driven program designed to acclimate first-year freshmen to the University of Arizona. It includes individual meetings with a peer adviser, college success workshops and opportunities to engage in various campus activities. Prodigy peer advisers are generally assigned 15-20 first-year students for the academic year. Peer advisers exercise independent judgment and decision-making, provide one-on-one support through individualized meetings with students and facilitate scheduled group workshops. Additionally, Prodigy hosts three culturally centered learning communities – EDGE, First Year Scholars and 360 – that partner with the UA cultural centers to offer a unique experience for interested students. Contact Mary Frances Kuper.
  • Student Affairs Outreach (10 hours per week). Student Affairs Outreach is designed to increase awareness of campus services and to provide a digital community for students to connect with the University. Outreach facilitators are current UA sophomores, juniors and seniors who share their experience and knowledge with new students. Their role is to connect new students to all of the resources available on campus. Outreach facilitators send weekly "Wildcat Connections" emails to a group of about 200-300 students; call students periodically throughout the semester to talk about classes, clubsand organizations, course registration and final exams; answer questions and connect students to different campus resources and information; and connect with new students through social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Wordpress. Contact Jen Ludwig at ludwigj@email.arizona.edu or 520-626-3724.
  • Student Support Services/TRiO (10-15 hours per week). Student Support Services/TRiO is a federally funded grant intended to work with first-generation, low-income college students to provide support throughout college (freshman through senior year) and increase graduation rates. There are both freshman and sophomore peer advisers. Freshman peer advisers work with 15-20 students, facilitating workshops twice a month and holding biweekly one-on-one meetings pertaining to the transition from high school to college. Sophomore peer advisers work with about 30 students, facilitating workshops once a month and holding one-on-ones once a month, focusing on major choice and career path. Student assistants provide administrative support to the program, providing general office duties, maintaining the Facebook page, creating the weekly newsletter, reaching out to students and other clerical duties as assigned. There is one math skills coach and one writing skills coach; each provides tutoring and learning support in their specific areas. Small one-on-one caseloads are assigned but most work is done in the form of drop-in hours and group sessions. Contact Michelle McKelvey at mfig@email.arizona.edu or 520-626-8847.

Students employed by ASA gain valuable career skills and experience while providing leadership and mentorship to their peers in a supportive and challenging student services environment. All positions are conveniently located on campus with flexible schedules.

Please encourage your students to apply by completing the attached application and submitting it to our reception desk located in the lower level of the Robert L. Nugent Building or by visiting our online application. Students can also visit our front desk to pick up a paper copy of the application. Once again, this is a joint hiring process and only one application is necessary.

Applications are due by noon on March 29. If you or potential applicants have any questions, please contact ASA at 520-626-3745.
