UA Hillel Foundation's 27th Annual Holocaust Vigil

University of Arizona Hillel Foundation
March 12, 2018

The University of Arizona Hillel Foundation's 27th Annual Holocaust Vigil is a 24-hour program dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust on the University of Arizona campus, as well as an opportunity to increase tolerance and understanding both on campus and in Tucson. The vigil is an annual Hillel initiative, which is fully designed and organized by a committee of dedicated students.

The vigil takes place from 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, until 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, on the University of Arizona Mall.

This annual event includes many new interactive activities this year.

  • The event provides a variety of museum pods allowing participants to learn about the Holocaust. This year will feature an additional new pod titled "Hidden Spaces." Visitors will participate in an experience centered on the historical fact of Jewish concealment in hidden spaces during the Holocaust. Visitors will physically enter a space dressed with period furniture to undergo an immense educational sensation of the historical moment in question.
  • Local Holocaust survivors will be available for discussion between noon and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21. Time will be given for questions from the audience.
  • In addition, we have a new interactive art project to commemorate the 1.5 million children who perished during the Holocaust. Local artist Julie Stein has created artistic frames that surround the poem, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly." Audience participants will decorate the frames. In honor of the children of the Holocaust, the frames and poem will be on display during the event.

All event activities are open to the public and free of charge. Parking is available at the campus parking garages. The media is welcome to attend.
