UA Journalism Student & AZPM Intern, Mariana Dale, Spends Summer at NPR West Coast Headquarters, Joins NPR's Morning Edition news team

Mariana Dale, a UA journalism student and Arizona Public Media intern, is spending her summer at NPR’s west coast headquarters working on the daily morning news program Morning Edition. Here’s how it all came about in her words:

"I found out about the NPR internship program through a mentor, Doug Mitchell, who I met at a multimedia journalism workshop in the summer 2012. The idea of applying lived in the back of my mind until I started my internship at AZPM. Though I'd taken a multimedia class and produced a few audio slideshows before the semester, my experience in journalism was almost all print-centric. It's safe to say I'd never written a story in the present tense before.

"I'd been a listener of NPR, AZPM and news podcasts, but really had no idea as to how an audio story was created. My time at AZPM was a crash course in all things radio and I loved it. I learned how to write a script, voice a story, go out in the field, collect audio and then cobble it all together. Radio is such a rich medium to work in because the listener hears directly from the people involved in the story. It's one thing to read words and it's another to hear the timbre and intonation in a person's voice.

"With this experience, I thought it would be worth the effort to apply, but I knew that competition would be stiff. I was shocked to hear from Shannon Rhoades, the senior editor of Morning Edition, who wanted to talk about my application and even more surprised when I was offered the internship a few days later. As the intern for the show, I arrive at NPR West bright and early for the 6 a.m. video conference with the Morning Edition team in Washington D.C. I'll be responsible for helping with research for the show, pulling tape, and eventually pitching story ideas."

Mariana will return to the UA this fall as a senior.

As an AZPM intern, Mariana had the opportunity to gain hands-on journalism experience. Read and listen to a sample of her work here: https://www.azpm.org/p/top-business/2013/5/8/24200-farm-bill-excludes-emergency-drought-relief/.
