University to share budget update at this week's ABOR meeting

The Arizona Board of Regents will receive an update on the University's budget status when it meets at the University of Arizona this week.

The report will be delivered by John Arnold, interim chief financial officer and senior vice president for business affairs, based on the work he, President Robert C. Robbins, Ronald W. Marx, interim senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, and Garth Perry, vice president and chief budget officer, have done to set the fiscal year 2025 budget.

The Arizona Board of Regents is meeting April 17-19 at the University of Arizona.

Also at this week's meeting, the board will vote on the University's tuition and fees proposal for the 2024-25 academic year. All three state universities are proposing tuition increases this year.

Each year, University leadership consults with student leaders of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona and the Graduate and Professional Student Council to set tuition. Despite the continued impact of inflation, the University of Arizona's tuition proposal to the Arizona Board of Regents ensures no increase for continuing undergraduate students and modest increases for new students during the 2024-25 academic year.

The proposal includes a more streamlined and predictable tuition and fee structure designed to assist students in planning for college.

Each spring, the University typically submits nominations for new Regents Professors to the board. However, this year the University has reached its threshold of 3% of the total number of tenured and tenure-track faculty members. The University has 1,613 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and 50 Regents Professors, two beyond the threshold and the most in at least a decade.

The title of Regents Professor – the highest distinction given to faculty members at Arizona's state universities – is bestowed by the Arizona Board of Regents on faculty members with exceptional achievements that have brought them national or international distinction.

A list of professors holding the title of Regents Professor is on the Faculty Awards & Honors website.

Other items on the agenda:

  • The board will discuss and consider legislation affecting the university system.
  • ABOR staff will give an update about a marketing campaign to increase awareness of the Arizona Promise Program, a scholarship program designed to make higher education more accessible, as well as an update on the board's new college planning website, College Ready AZ.
  • The board will elect officers for one-year terms beginning July 1.
  • The board will vote on Regents' Research and Community Grant recommendations. The grants, funded by the Technology and Research Initiative Fund, are designed to support the development and delivery of solutions to critical issues facing Arizona.

The meeting is open to the public and available via livestream.
