Stock Receives Founders' Lecturer Award from Society for Invertebrate Pathology

S. Patricia Stock, professor of entomology and interim director of the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences, received the Founders' Lecturer award from the Society for Invertebrate Pathology.

Stock gave the lecture on Aug. 13 at the International Congress on Invertebrate Pathology and Microbial Control and the 51st Annual Meeting of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology in Gold Coast, Australia.

The Society for Invertebrate Pathology is an international organization that brings together members from a variety of scientific backgrounds to promote the knowledge of pathology of invertebrate animals. The organization's Founders' Lecturer award – is one of the highest honors it gives to individual scientists –recognizes an active member of the society for his or her "outstanding and seminal contributions to a field of research within the general discipline of invertebrate pathology."

Stock's lecture was titled "Ray Akhurst: A Legacy of Groundbreaking Contributions in Insect Pathology and Nematology." Akhurst, an Australian entomologist, was given the Founders' Honoree award, a similar recognition for retired members.

National Phenology Network Receives Climate Adaptation Leadership Award

The UA-based national coordinating office for the USA National Phenology Network has received a 2018 Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources from the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy. The award was presented at the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies' annual meeting on Sept. 10 in Tampa, Florida.

The National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy is a partnership between governmental agencies that aims to safeguard fish, wildlife, plants and natural resources against the effects of climate change. The strategy is led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with support from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. Its Climate Adaptation Leadership Awards for Natural Resources recognize leadership behind "outstanding projects or activities that are advancing the resilience of our nation's valuable fish, wildlife and plant resources in a changing climate."

The USA National Phenology Network, known as USA-NPN, collects, stores and shares phenology data and information. Its national coordinating office is housed in the UA School of Natural Resources and the Environment. Staff members work for the UA and the U.S. Geologic Survey.

Awards were given in six categories. The office won in the Broad Partnership category.

Wu Receives Book Prize for Excellence in Chan Studies

Jiang Wu, director of the UA Center for Buddhist Studies, has received the inaugural Tianzhu Book Prize for Excellence in Chan Studies from the Tianzhu Global Network for the Study of Buddhist Cultures, based at the University of British Columbia. Wu received the award and delivered a lecture in Vancouver, Canada, on Aug. 12.

The Tianzhu Global Network for the Study of Buddhist Cultures was established at UBC in January as a partnership with several other universities to "advance the study of Buddhism and East Asian cultures."

Wu was selected to receive the book prize for his 2015 book "Leaving for the Rising Sun: Chinese Zen Master Yinyuan and the Authenticity Crisis in Early Modern East Asia." The book is the first written in English about the founder of the Japanese Obaku School of Zen. The award was given to Wu in recognition of his "groundbreaking effort to study complex religious phenomena cutting cross both China and Japan in later centuries."

Wu, who also is a professor in the Department of East Asian Studies, has been at the UA since 2002.

UA Tech Park Wins Best Workplace Culture, Most Innovative Workplace Awards

The UA Tech Park at Rita Road won Tucson's Most Innovative Workplace and Best Workplace Culture awards in the Arizona Daily Star Readers' Choice Awards.

The annual awards recognize outstanding Tucson businesses and organizations in 340 categories.

The UA Tech Park at Rita Road is one of the largest employment centers in the region, with 52 companies and organizations that employ 5,870 skilled employees in 15 industries. The UA Tech Park and its resident companies have an annual economic impact of $2 billion. The Tech Park strives to be an interactive community where innovators and business leaders meet and where emerging companies and technology giants work side by side. Employees from Tech Park companies connect with each other, establishing a broader sense of community.  Employees also come together through fitness classes and pop-up parties.
