Date: May 28, 2019

The University of Arizona has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural cohort of the Seal of Excelencia, a program under Excelencia in Education, a national organization focused on accelerating Latino student success. The University's application was submitted by Marla A. Franco, assistant vice provost for Hispanic-Serving Institution Initiatives.

The Seal of Excelencia is a voluntary system focused on changing institutional focus and practice. The Seal is designed to create demand in the higher education market for improving Latino student success by leveraging the momentum of a growing Latino population as they evaluate and choose to attend colleges and universities that show evidence of truly serving Latino students.

To attain the Seal, institutions must demonstrate they have reached benchmarks in the three core areas that Excelencia has determined are more likely to lead to Latino student success: data, practice and leadership.

Universities and colleges that applied for the Seal were evaluated on the following:

  • Alignment of data and practice in serving Latino students.
  • Strategies and practices that have been institutionalized in serving Latino students.
  • Evidence of effectiveness and intentionality in institutional practices in serving Latino students.

The institutions receiving the Seal of Excelencia will be publicly announced on June 20.
